Historical Background: SS Chained Dagger M1936 & Chain Variants
The SS Chained Dagger Model 1936 is one of the most distinctive SS edged weapons and differs from the standard SS dagger
primarily through its characteristic chain hanger with symbolic links. This version was intended mainly for wear with the uniform
and is considerably more complex in manufacture than regular dagger variants.
Collectors commonly classify SS chains by reference literature.
In the system used by Ralf Siegert, this chain is known as Type B2, while Thomas T. Wittmann lists the same construction as Type II.
Typical traits include the magnetic iron construction, a Wotan’s knot with closed loops, and the absence of
background darkening behind the symbol links.
Fine details of the skull link are also important identification features, such as the missing nasal divider.
The clearly visible, machine-applied SS stamp on the reverse of the symbol link is another key marker.
Examples preserved in found condition document an unaltered, authentic state and are often highly appreciated by advanced collectors.
