SS Dagger [Late Model] with Vertical-Hanger by RZM M7/80 (Gustav Spitzer Solingen)
Late-production SS service dagger in RZM manufacture, produced under the regulations of the Reichszeugmeisterei. The blade is marked with maker code M7/80, attributed to the Solingen manufacturer Gustav Spitzer. This piece shows the typical characteristics of a late SS dagger and is offered together with an original vertical hanger.
Grip: Wooden grip of the late pattern, fitted with the SS emblem and an aluminium national eagle. Both insignia are period-correct and clamped from the inside. The crossguards are made of silvered zinc. The grip is firm and without movement between the fittings.
Blade: Double-edged, mirror-bright steel blade in very clean condition, free from rust pitting, nicks or damage. On the front is the deeply and sharply etched SS motto “Meine Ehre heißt Treue” in the angular style typical of late RZM examples. The reverse bears the RZM code “M7/80” for Gustav Spitzer, Solingen. The tip is complete and unshortened; the blade shoulders fit cleanly against the lower crossguard.
Scabbard: Iron scabbard with black painted finish. The fittings are made of nickel-plated sheet steel and are each secured on the side by two screws. The scabbard is straight and shows no deformation.
Hanger: Black vertical hanger in period-correct configuration. Stamped Assmann DRGM. The snap hook is made of iron. A fitting suspension piece that complements the late-production dagger very well.
Historical Context: SS service dagger of the late RZM period
Late SS service daggers differ in several details from the earlier examples. Whereas early production pieces were often fitted with heavier nickel or nickel-silver parts, the later variants show a more standardized manufacture according to the regulations of the Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM). This includes maker codes on the blade and a changed choice of materials for fittings and insignia.
Typical for this late period are zinc crossguards, an aluminium eagle and the clearly executed motto “Meine Ehre heißt Treue”, characteristic of RZM daggers. The marking M7/80 allows attribution to Gustav Spitzer, Solingen, making the piece interesting from a maker-identification standpoint as well.
The dagger is accompanied by a correct black vertical hanger, as frequently encountered with late carrying configurations. A coherent set of dagger, scabbard and period-appropriate hanger has strong collector appeal, as it presents the characteristic appearance of late SS daggers in a particularly complete way.
