SA Dagger [Early Version] by Carl Schmidt & Son Solingen

Early SA service dagger of the Sturmabteilung (SA) from the production period 1933–1935. The reverse of the blade bears the maker’s mark “Carl Schmidt & Sohn Solingen”. The overall length is approx. 37.3 cm. The lower crossguard is stamped with the Reichsgau mark “Ns” for Niedersachsen, matching this maker.

Grip: Brown wooden grip in typical early configuration. Fitted are the nickel national eagle and, above it, the enameled SA emblem, both period-correct and clamped from the inside. Both crossguards are made of nickel. The lower crossguard is hand-stamped on the reverse with the group mark “Ns” for Niedersachsen.

Blade: Bright blade in good preserved condition. The so-called crossgrain is present. On the front is the SA motto in dark, angular etch: “Alles für Deutschland”. The reverse bears the maker’s logo “Carl Schmidt & Sohn Solingen”. The blade shoulders fit cleanly and precisely against the lower crossguard.

Scabbard: Iron scabbard with brown blued finish. The two fittings are made of nickel-plated sheet steel. One side screw is missing from the upper fitting. Overall still a matching early scabbard configuration for the dagger.

Historical Context: Early SA service dagger 1933–1935 of the Niedersachsen group

The SA service dagger was introduced in 1933 as a traditional and representative weapon of the Sturmabteilung (SA). Early production examples from the years 1933 to 1935 are especially interesting to collectors because they still show the typical choice of materials, workmanship, and design language of the initial production period.

An important feature of these early pieces is the group mark on the lower crossguard. The marking “Ns” present here refers to the Niedersachsen group. Such regional markings allow a more precise organizational attribution and are among the appreciated details within this collecting field.

The maker Carl Schmidt & Sohn, Solingen belongs among the classic producers of early SA daggers. Combined with the characteristic motto “Alles für Deutschland”, the preserved crossgrain, and the brown-blued scabbard, this forms a coherent early piece. The missing side screw on the upper scabbard fitting should be noted for completeness, without diminishing the general collector appeal of the dagger.
