SA Dagger [Early Version] by Herbertz & Meuerer Solingen

Original SA Service Dagger, early production period (1933–1935) of the Sturmabteilung (SA), manufactured by Herbertz & Meuerer, Solingen. This example belongs to the early phase of production and displays the high-quality materials and craftsmanship characteristic of this period.

Grip: Brown wooden grip in the typical early pattern. The grip is fitted with the national eagle and the enameled SA roundel, both internally pinned. Upper and lower crossguards are made of solid nickel. The lower crossguard bears the period-correct group marking “He” for the SA Gau Hessen.

Blade: Double-edged, mirror-polished blade. The obverse features the etched SA motto “Alles für Deutschland”. The reverse bears the original maker’s mark Herbertz & Meuerer, Solingen. The blade shoulders fit precisely to the lower crossguard – a key quality indicator of early original assembly.

Scabbard: Steel scabbard retaining its original brown anodized finish. Both scabbard fittings are made of nickel-plated steel sheet and are secured laterally with two screws each. The upper fitting is equipped with the ring for the suspension hanger.

Historical Context: SA Service Dagger – Early Production (1933–1935)

The SA Service Dagger was introduced in 1933 as the official sidearm of the Sturmabteilung. Early production examples up to approximately 1935 are distinguished by their superior workmanship, particularly the use of solid nickel for the crossguards.

The group marking on the lower crossguard indicates regional assignment within the SA. The marking “He” denotes the SA Gau Hessen and is typical of early original daggers.

The Solingen manufacturer Herbertz & Meuerer was among the firms supplying SA daggers during the early years, before later wartime simplifications and material substitutions were introduced. Daggers of this quality are highly sought after by collectors today.
