Lauterjung & Sohn PUMA, Solingen
The Lauterjung & Sohn (PUMA), Stahlwarenfabrik, was founded in 1769 in Solingen, when Johann Wilhelm Lauterjung registered his trademark in the Solingen cutler's roll. The company's history is deeply rooted in the blade-making tradition along the Wupper River, where numerous grinding shops (Kotten) operated using water-powered natural sandstones. In the early 19th century, there were 93 grinding shops and six hammer forges along the river. The invention of the steam engine reduced reliance on water power. Historical records, including a legal dispute in 1691 against the fishing heirs, show that the Lauterjung family won the right to use the lower part of the Wupper in Balkhausen, where the Balkhauser Kotten stands today as a living museum. During the Nazi era, Lauterjung & Sohn expanded production to edged weapons, particularly SA service daggers. In 1935, it received the RZM code M7/27, assigned for the production of political daggers. The company continues today at www.pumaknives.de, producing high-quality knives and blades.
The firm produced approximately 17,000 SA service daggers (Sturmabteilung), rated with a rarity of 3/5 as moderately rare. These daggers bear the motto "Alles für Deutschland" and feature nickel-silver fittings. Other products include knives, scissors, and modern blades.
The logo of Lauterjung & Sohn consisted of a leaping puma, often supplemented by the text "PUMA Solingen." This trademark symbolized strength and elegance and made the products recognizable in the collector's scene.
Today, the products of Lauterjung & Sohn are coveted collectibles that embody the industrial and historical development of the Solingen manufacturer history in the edged weapons industry. The company represents the transition from civilian cutlery to military weapons during the Nazi era, making it an important chapter in the encyclopedia of Solingen manufacturers. We are interested in purchasing products from this manufacturer.
