SA Dagger [Early Version] by Puma Solingen

Early example of an SA Service Dagger of the Sturmabteilung (SA), produced between 1933–1935 by the renowned maker PUMA Solingen. The reverse of the lower crossguard bears the original SA group mark “Wm” for Westmark. A genuine early-period piece with an attractive, even patina. Overall length: 37.5 cm.

Grip: Dark brown wooden grip with inset nickel eagle and enameled SA roundel, both original and securely fitted. Minor age wear and small chips. Upper and lower crossguards are made of solid nickel silver. The reverse of the lower guard is stamped with the group mark “Wm” (Westmark).

Blade: Double-edged and mirror-polished, featuring the deeply etched SA motto “Alles für Deutschland” (“Everything for Germany”) in a crisp Gothic style. The reverse shows the maker’s logo Puma Solingen with the distinctive puma head emblem. The original crossgrain finish is clearly visible along the entire blade and remains 100% intact.

Scabbard: Steel scabbard with original brown anodized finish, evenly preserved and free of dents. Both fittings are of nickel silver and attached by four small side screws. The upper fitting bears the closed suspension ring for the dagger hanger. A very fine and consistent early example with appealing patina.

Historical Background: Early SA Service Dagger

The SA Service Dagger was introduced in late 1933 as the official sidearm of the Sturmabteilung (SA). Its design was inspired by the Holbein dagger of the 15th century, representing honor and loyalty within the SA ranks.

Early examples such as this one by Puma Solingen show exceptional craftsmanship, solid nickel fittings, and deeply etched blades. The group mark “Wm” identifies the Westmark SA district, confirming its regional assignment.

Daggers produced before the standardized RZM inspection (1935) are among the most desirable collectibles today, particularly those retaining their full original crossgrain finish.
