SS Chained Dagger [M1936] with Type-B1 Chain
SS chained dagger of the 1936 pattern, preserved in untouched original condition without later restoration or improvement. According to the typology of Ralf Siegert, the chain assembly is Type B1; under Thomas Wittmann, it is classified as Type II. A particularly desirable collector’s piece in coherent, unaltered condition.
Grip: Black ebony grip in outstanding preserved condition. Fitted are the SS runes and the national eagle, both period-correct and clamped from the inside, and apparently never removed. An aluminium portepee is wrapped around the grip, adding strongly to the visual appeal of this chained dagger.
Blade: Bright blade without rust or nicks, with preserved crossgrain. On the front is the SS motto “Meine Ehre heißt Treue”. The reverse is unmarked, as expected for this variant. The blade tip is fully preserved and unshortened.
Scabbard / chain assembly: Iron scabbard with black original paint. The chain assembly is made of nickel silver and corresponds to Type B1. The Wotan knot is closed in loops. At the nose opening of the skull link, there is no nasal divider. The chain shows an even, untouched patina and appears entirely unpolished / uncleaned. The SS stamp on the reverse of the SS-symbol link is clearly visible and machine-struck.
Historical Context: SS chained dagger model 1936
The SS chained dagger model 1936 is among the most distinctive and collector-desirable variants within SS edged weapons. In contrast to the regular SS service dagger, this form is defined above all by its characteristic chain suspension and by its strongly individual representative appearance.
Of particular importance to collectors are the different chain types and detailed link characteristics. Typological classifications by authors such as Ralf Siegert and Thomas Wittmann play a central role in evaluating such pieces. The chain described here is identified as Type B1 or Type II and shows several corresponding features, including the closed Wotan knot and the characteristic form of the skull link.
Especially valued are untouched original examples with even patina, clearly struck stamps, and a coherent overall appearance. Together with a clean blade, the typical unmarked reverse, and the original painted scabbard, such an SS chained dagger carries strong collector significance and ranks among the most impressive edged weapons of this collecting field.
