Marine-SA-Dagger [Early Version] by Justus Brenger (JUSTINUSWERK) Solingen
Rare early Marine SA service dagger from the production period 1933–1935, manufactured by Justus Brenger & Co. (JUSTINUSWERK), Solingen. Complete with the matching, likewise gilded hanger. The lower crossguard bears the maker-appropriate group mark “He” for Hessen. An exceptionally rare piece within the field of early SA dagger production.
Grip: Wooden grip with inset national eagle and enameled SA roundel, both originally clamped from the inside and untouched. The upper and lower crossguards are made of solid nickel / nickel silver and are fully gilded. On the reverse, the lower crossguard bears the group mark “He” for Hessen. All fittings show an even, originally preserved gilded finish.
Blade: Bright blade with clearly visible crossgrain. The front side bears the deeply etched SA motto “Alles für Deutschland”. On the reverse is the maker’s mark “Justus Brenger & Co. (JUSTINUSWERK) Solingen”. The blade shoulders fit precisely into the lower crossguard – a typical feature of early production.
Scabbard: Iron scabbard with original brown blued finish, straight and without dents. The gilded scabbard fittings are secured laterally by two screws each. The upper fitting carries the closed suspension ring for the hanger. The finish shows a fine, evenly matured aged surface.
Hanger: Brown leather hanger of early production with a functional snap fastener. All metal parts – buckle, clasp and hook – are gilded and very well preserved. A complete carrying ensemble, extremely rare in this combination.
Historical Context: Early Marine SA service dagger
The Marine SA service dagger is among the more unusual and desirable special variants within the field of early SA daggers. While the basic form follows the standard SA service dagger, these examples stand out through their maritime-associated finish and especially through their gilded fittings, which clearly distinguish them from ordinary examples.
Typical early examples from the years 1933 to 1935 are characterized by high-quality materials such as nickel / nickel silver fittings, a deeply etched motto, neatly set emblems and a generally very precise fit of the components. The group mark “He” present here refers to the SA group Hessen and adds further collector interest to the early production characteristics.
Particularly noteworthy is the complete and coherent combination of a gilded dagger, gilded scabbard fittings and the matching gilded early leather hanger. Such complete ensembles are significantly rarer than single daggers or later assembled combinations.
The maker Justus Brenger & Co. (JUSTINUSWERK), Solingen is also a sought-after name within early SA and Marine SA production. Together with the preserved original finish, clearly visible crossgrain and the harmonious overall patina, this forms an exceptionally attractive collector’s piece among early German edged weapons.
