SA Dagger [Early Version] by Carl Heidelberg Solingen
Early SA service dagger of the Sturmabteilung from the production period 1933–1935, bearing the maker mark Carl Heidelberg Solingen. The lower crossguard features the matching group marking “Wf” for Westfalen. A classic and collector-oriented example of an early SA dagger with characteristic features of the early production period.
Grip: Brown wooden grip in typical early construction. The grip is fitted with the national eagle and the enameled SA emblem, both original and period-correct internally crimped. The crossguards are manufactured from nickel. The lower crossguard additionally bears the district marking “Wf” for Westfalen.
Blade: Bright blade showing light signs of sharpening or polishing. The obverse features the SA motto “Alles für Deutschland”. The reverse side bears the maker mark “Carl Heidelberg Solingen”. The blade shoulders fit cleanly against the lower crossguard and create a harmonious overall appearance.
Scabbard: Early iron scabbard retaining its original browned finish. The scabbard fittings are made of nickel-plated sheet steel and secured by two screws on each side. The upper fitting retains the typical suspension ring for the carrying hanger.
Historical Background: Early SA Service Dagger with “Wf” Westfalen Group Marking
The SA service dagger was introduced in 1933 as the standardized sidearm of the Sturmabteilung (SA) and today remains one of the best-known organizational edged weapons of the Third Reich. Early examples produced until approximately 1935 are often distinguished by high-quality materials such as nickel crossguards, internally crimped emblems and early iron scabbards with original browned finish.
Of particular interest on this example is the group marking “Wf” on the lower crossguard, assigned to the SA group Westfalen. Such district markings allow a regional attribution and are often highly desirable among collectors.
The maker Carl Heidelberg, Solingen belongs among the recognized manufacturers of early SA daggers. Combined with its early production features, nickel fittings and matching district marking, this dagger represents an authentic collector’s piece of German organizational edged weapons.
