Luftwaffe Dagger [1937] with Hangers and Knot

Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937 in the 2nd Model configuration, complete with two-piece hangers and Luftwaffe portepee. The dagger has an overall length of approximately 43.5 cm and corresponds to the classic configuration of the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger with white grip, double wire wrapping, Luftwaffe eagle crossguard, granulated scabbard, unmarked blade and preserved wearing accessories. The blade is executed without maker marking and remains in uncleaned condition.

Grip & Crossguard: White grip with double wire wrapping. The fluting is convex, curving outward, and corresponds to the typical grip form of the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937. The pommel is firmly screwed onto the tang and decorated on both sides with sun wheels as well as surrounding oak leaf ornamentation. The crossguard is executed in the form of the Luftwaffe eagle, facing left, with downward swept wing tips. In the center, the eagle holds a swastika in its claws. The reverse side of the crossguard has a granulated finish.

Blade: Double-edged blade without maker marking, preserved in uncleaned condition. The unmarked execution is a known variant within the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937. The uncleaned surface has not been subsequently polished and should be taken into account when assessing the condition.

Scabbard: The scabbard is made from drawn sheet steel and displays the typical granulated surface texture on both front and reverse. Fitted with a separately inserted throat piece, secured by one side screw. The scabbard has two oak leaf decorated suspension bands with loose, fully closed suspension rings. The tip of the scabbard is rounded and undamaged. The execution corresponds to the classic scabbard form of the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937.

Hangers & Portepee: The dagger is preserved together with two-piece Luftwaffe hangers and a Luftwaffe portepee. These wearing accessories complete the representative appearance of the dagger and belong to the typical equipment of a Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger. Together with the white grip, granulated scabbard and unmarked blade, the dagger forms a coherent ensemble of the Model 1937.

Special Features: Especially noteworthy is the combination of white grip with double wire wrapping, unmarked blade in uncleaned condition, granulated scabbard, two-piece hangers and Luftwaffe portepee. This dagger represents a classic, unmarked version of the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937 with preserved wearing accessories.

Historical Background: Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937 with Hangers and Portepee

The Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937 was introduced as the second dagger pattern of the German Luftwaffe and replaced the earlier Luftwaffe Aircrew Dagger Model 1935 as the standard officer’s edged weapon. It was worn with dress and parade uniforms and served as a representative equipment item for Luftwaffe officers.

Characteristic features of the Model 1937 include the round fluted grip, the spherical pommel with national emblems, the crossguard in the form of the Luftwaffe eagle and the granulated scabbard with two suspension rings. Depending on maker, production period and material execution, different detail variations occur in grips, fittings, scabbards, blades and wearing accessories.

Not all Luftwaffe Officer’s Daggers carry a maker marking on the blade. Unmarked blades are known within this dagger model and are identified through construction, fittings, grip execution, scabbard and other detail features.

The two-piece hangers and the portepee belonged to the representative wearing configuration of the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger and completed the uniform equipment. Together with the white grip, double wire wrapping, granulated scabbard and typical fittings, this piece forms a classic ensemble of the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937.
