Luftwaffe Dagger [1937] with Hangers by WKC Solingen
Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937 in the 2nd Model configuration, manufactured by WKC Solingen / Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Cie.. The dagger has an overall length of approximately 43.2 cm and is preserved together with a two-piece Luftwaffe hanger. The reverse side of the blade bears the maker marking “WKC Solingen”. The dagger corresponds to the classic configuration of the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger with light-colored grip, Luftwaffe eagle crossguard, mirror-bright blade, granulated scabbard and original leather buffer washer.
Grip & Crossguard: Light-colored, round grip with convex fluting. The fluting curves outward and corresponds to the typical form of the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937. The pommel is firmly screwed onto the tang and decorated on both sides with national emblems as well as surrounding oak leaf ornamentation. The crossguard is executed in the form of the Luftwaffe eagle, facing left, with downward swept wing tips. In its claws, the eagle holds a swastika. The reverse side of the crossguard has a granulated finish.
Blade: Double-edged, mirror-bright blade with reverse maker marking “WKC Solingen”. Between the blade shoulders and the lower crossguard is the original leather buffer washer. The maker marking allows a clear attribution to Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Cie. and is an important feature when identifying this Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger.
Scabbard: The scabbard is made from drawn sheet steel and displays the typical granulated surface texture on both front and reverse. Fitted with a separately inserted throat piece, secured from the side by one screw. The scabbard has two oak leaf decorated suspension bands with loose, fully closed suspension rings. The tip of the scabbard is rounded and undamaged. The execution corresponds to the classic scabbard form of the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937.
Hanger: The dagger comes with a two-piece Luftwaffe hanger. The hanger complements the wearing equipment of the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger and belongs to the typical representative uniform accessories. Please note that one snap hook of the hanger is broken. Despite this damage, the hanger remains an important accompanying accessory for the overall appearance of the ensemble.
Special Features: Especially noteworthy is the combination of WKC Solingen, light-colored grip, mirror-bright blade with maker marking, original leather buffer washer, granulated scabbard and present two-piece hanger. The broken snap hook on the hanger should be taken into account when assessing the condition. Overall, this is a clearly attributable ensemble of the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937 by a well-known Solingen maker.
Historical Background: Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937 with Hanger
The Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937 was introduced as the second dagger pattern of the German Luftwaffe and replaced the earlier Luftwaffe Aircrew Dagger Model 1935 as the standard officer’s edged weapon. It was worn with the dress and parade uniform and served as a representative equipment item for Luftwaffe officers.
Characteristic features of the Model 1937 include the round fluted grip, the spherical pommel with national emblems, the crossguard in the form of the Luftwaffe eagle and the granulated scabbard with two suspension rings. Depending on maker, production period and materials used, different detail variations occur in grips, fittings, scabbards, blades and wearing accessories.
WKC Solingen / Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Cie. was one of the well-known Solingen manufacturers of edged weapons, daggers and military equipment items. The maker marking “WKC Solingen” on the blade allows a clear attribution and is an important feature when identifying this Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger.
The two-piece hanger belonged to the representative wearing configuration of the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger and allowed the dagger to be worn with the uniform. Preserved daggers with associated hangers are especially interesting for collectors, as they make the original wearing configuration and complete appearance of the dagger model easier to understand.
