Navy Officer Dagger [2nd Model]
Kriegsmarine Officer’s Dagger Model 1938 with lightning scabbard. The dagger has an overall length of approximately 41.8 cm and corresponds to the classic configuration of the Kriegsmarine Officer’s Dagger with light-colored grip, wire wrapping, gilded non-ferrous metal fittings, bright double-edged blade and lightning-pattern scabbard. The lightning scabbard is one of the well-known scabbard variants of the Kriegsmarine Officer’s Dagger Model 1938.
Grip & Fittings: Light-colored, slightly oval grip with surrounding double wire wrapping. The crossguard and pommel are made of non-ferrous metal and were gilded. The pommel is executed in the form of an eagle, holding a wreath with swastika in its claws. Below the crossguard is the original leather buffer washer. The combination of light grip, wire wrapping and gilded fittings corresponds to the typical representative design of the Kriegsmarine Officer’s Dagger.
Blade: Double-edged, bright blade. The plain blade form corresponds to the classic execution of the Kriegsmarine Officer’s Dagger Model 1938. Together with the original leather buffer washer and the gilded fittings, it creates a harmonious overall appearance of this naval edged weapon.
Scabbard: Kriegsmarine lightning scabbard with characteristic surface pattern. The scabbard is preserved without dents or bulges. Both suspension bands are decorated with oak leaf ornamentation and each has a closed suspension ring. The throat piece is separately inserted and secured by two side screws. The lightning scabbard gives the dagger a particularly striking appearance and is one of the distinctive scabbard variants of the Kriegsmarine Officer’s Dagger.
Special Features: Especially noteworthy is the combination of Kriegsmarine Officer’s Dagger Model 1938, light-colored grip with double wire wrapping, gilded non-ferrous metal fittings, original leather buffer washer, bright double-edged blade and preserved lightning scabbard without dents or bulges. The lightning scabbard gives the dagger a particularly decorative appearance and makes this piece an interesting example within Kriegsmarine edged weapons.
Historical Background: Kriegsmarine Officer’s Dagger Model 1938 with Lightning Scabbard
The Kriegsmarine Officer’s Dagger Model 1938 was the representative edged weapon for officers of the German Kriegsmarine. It was worn with dress and parade uniforms and was not intended as a combat knife, but as a rank and representation item within the officer’s equipment.
Characteristic features of this dagger type include the light-colored grip with wire wrapping, gilded fittings, eagle pommel, crossguard and long, double-edged blade. Depending on maker, production period and execution, different variants occur in grip material, gilding, blades, scabbards and wearing accessories.
The so-called lightning scabbard is a particularly distinctive scabbard variant of the Kriegsmarine Officer’s Dagger. Its striking surface pattern clearly differs from plain or hammered scabbard types. Such scabbards strongly influence the overall appearance of the dagger and are an important equipment feature for collectors.
Together with the light-colored grip, double wire wrapping, gilded non-ferrous metal fittings, original leather buffer washer and well-preserved lightning scabbard, this dagger shows the typical representative design of the Kriegsmarine Officer’s Dagger Model 1938.
