Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937, 2nd Model with original portepee. The dagger has a light-colored, fluted grip with wire wrapping, a double-edged blade and the typical granulated metal scabbard. The lower scabbard band with suspension ring is missing. The overall length is approximately 430 mm, with a weight of approximately 388 g.

Grip & Hilt: Light-colored, fluted grip with preserved wire wrapping. The pommel shows the typical form of the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger M1937 with oak leaf decoration. The crossguard is formed as a Luftwaffe eagle with outstretched wings. The grip and metal fittings show age- and use-related traces.

Blade: Bright, double-edged blade with central ridge. The blade shows age- and scabbard-related surface traces, but is otherwise preserved in clean condition. No maker marking is indicated on this example.

Scabbard: Granulated metal scabbard in the typical configuration for the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger M1937. The upper scabbard band with suspension ring is present. The lower scabbard band including the suspension ring is missing. Corresponding age- and use-related surface traces are visible in the area of the missing fitting. The remainder of the scabbard is preserved.

Portepee: The original portepee is attached to the dagger. It shows clear age- and wear-related traces, including abrasion and areas of fraying to the textile. The knot and wrapping are present.

Condition: The dagger is in overall condition 2. Grip, hilt, blade, scabbard and portepee are preserved. The grip wire wrapping is present. The portepee shows clear signs of use. The lower scabbard band with suspension ring is missing. The upper scabbard band and corresponding suspension ring are present.

Historical Background: Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937

The Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937 was worn as a sidearm with the officer’s uniform. Typical features include a light-colored, fluted grip with wire wrapping, a pommel with oak leaf decoration, a crossguard in the form of a Luftwaffe eagle, a double-edged blade and a granulated metal scabbard.

The scabbards of these daggers normally have two scabbard bands with suspension rings for attachment of the hangers. On the present example, the upper band with suspension ring is preserved, while the lower band and suspension ring are missing.

The dagger is also fitted with a portepee tied around the grip area. The present portepee shows age- and wear-related traces.

The dagger is described as a historical collector’s object and period edged weapon. The description is limited to model, construction, accessories and condition.
