SA Service Dagger [Early Production] with Honor Award Dedication & Hanger by SMF Solingen
Early SA service dagger of the Sturmabteilung (SA), produced in the period 1933–1935, maker SMF, Solingen, complete with an early 3-piece leather hanger. A special highlight is the rare award / presentation dedication on the reverse of the blade: “Ehrenpreis d. Stand. R35 Preisschiessen 18.10.1935”. The lower crossguard bears the Gau stamp “Nrh” for Niederrhein.
Grip: Brown wooden grip in an early configuration. Fitted are the national eagle and, above it, the enameled SA emblem, both period-correct and crimped/clamped from the inside. The eagle was most likely removed or loosened at some point in the past. Both crossguards are made of nickel.
Blade: Very well-preserved blade. The front side bears the SA motto “Alles für Deutschland”. The reverse shows the maker’s mark “SMF Solingen” and the dedication: “Ehrenpreis d. Stand. R35 Preisschiessen 18.10.1935”. The blade shoulders fit perfectly to the lower crossguard.
Scabbard: Steel scabbard with original finish (blued). Both scabbard fittings are made of nickel-plated sheet steel and are secured laterally with two screws each.
Hanger: Early 3-piece leather hanger with a functional spring clip / snap hook. Fittings in nickel.
Historical Context: Early SA Service Dagger 1933–1935 with Award Dedication (1935)
The SA service dagger was introduced in 1933 as a traditional and representative edged weapon of the Sturmabteilung (SA). Early examples (approx. 1933–1935) are typically characterized by the strong etching of the motto “Alles für Deutschland” and by period-correct variations in grips and fittings.
An important identification feature is the Gau stamp on the lower crossguard, used for organizational allocation. The marking “Nrh” is commonly associated with the Niederrhein region.
Particularly desirable are daggers bearing dedications or prize inscriptions, as they document a specific contemporary occasion. The present award dedication to the Standarte R35 prize shooting event dated 18 October 1935 makes this a historically and collectingly noteworthy early SA dagger.
