SA Dagger [Early Version] with 3-Piece Hanger by Carl Eickhorn Solingen

Very early example of an SA Service Dagger in exceptionally rare configuration, featuring the assembly number “5” on the lower crossguard – a marking usually found only on H. Himmler Honour Daggers. Manufactured by Carl Eickhorn, Solingen, during the earliest production period from 1933 to 1935.

Grip: Brown wooden grip in excellent condition, inset with nickel eagle insignia and enameled SA roundel, both original and internally pinned. Crossguards made of solid nickel, the lower crossguard marked with the assembly number “5” and the district stamp “Wf” for Westfalen (Westphalia). Perfect fit between grip and guards – typical of early Eickhorn craftsmanship.

Blade: Double-edged and mirror-polished, with a light area of oxidation near the crossguard. Obverse deeply etched with the SA motto “Alles für Deutschland” (“Everything for Germany”) in sharp, crisp Gothic lettering. Reverse with early Carl Eickhorn Solingen maker mark, featuring the squirrel with spiked tail and the initials “C.E.” – used circa 1933–1935. Both sides show 100% preserved crossgraining. The blade shoulders fit precisely into the lower guard.

Scabbard: Straight steel scabbard with its original brown anodized finish, free of dents or deformations. Nickel-plated steel fittings, each secured by two side screws. Upper fitting with suspension ring for the hanger.

Hanger: Early three-piece leather hanger with hook, unmarked – typical for early production pieces. Brown leather straps with fully functional snap clip. Buckle and clip made of nickel-plated steel. Completely original and exceptionally well-preserved – an authentic early-production set of outstanding quality.

Historical Context: Early SA Daggers and Production Features (1933–1935)

The early SA service daggers produced between 1933 and 1935 represent the beginning of standardized dagger manufacture in the Third Reich. Crafted from solid nickel and nickel-silver, these pieces exhibit remarkable precision and finish.

This particular example by Carl Eickhorn, Solingen is notable for its assembly number “5” stamped on the crossguard – a feature otherwise known only from H. Himmler honour daggers. It confirms an early internal production stage within the Eickhorn workshop.

The “Wf” (Westfalen) district marking identifies the regional SA group to which the dagger was issued. Combined with the early anodized brown scabbard, nickel fittings, and sharp motto etching, this dagger perfectly illustrates the high-quality craftsmanship of the first SA dagger generation introduced in 1933.

After 1936, the RZM began to standardize and supervise production, resulting in simplified materials and finishes. Early nickel examples like this one, with group and assembly markings, are now highly sought after by collectors and regarded as cornerstones of Solingen edged weapon history.
