Luftwaffe Dagger [M1935] with Knot by E. & F. Hörster Co. Solingen
Luftwaffe Aircrew Dagger Model 1935 (1st Model) with portepee and original aluminium chain hanger, manufactured by E. & F. Hörster Solingen. This is an early example of the Luftwaffe aircrew dagger featuring the characteristic blue leather-covered grip, gilded fittings and maker-marked blade. The overall length is approximately 48.8 cm. The dagger is offered in well-preserved condition together with the portepee.
Grip: Wooden core covered with original blue Moroccan leather (Saffian leather) and characteristic triple aluminium wire wrapping. The screw-mounted pommel features gilded national emblems on both sides. The emblems on the crossguard also retain a well-preserved gilded finish. The crossguard follows the classic design of the early Luftwaffe aircrew dagger with stylized wing terminals. Age-related wear and patina are present.
Blade: Double-edged, bright blade with clean surface and fully preserved tip. The reverse side bears the maker mark “E. & F. Hörster Co. Solingen”. Between the blade base and lower crossguard is the original blue leather buffer washer. The blade shows normal age- and storage-related traces.
Scabbard & Hanger: Three-piece scabbard covered with blue Moroccan leather. The original aluminium chain hanger consists of 6 upper and 9 lower rings. The snap hook is marked on the reverse with “OLC” and “GES. GESCH.” and still retains period surface finish. The portepee is included.
Historical Background: Luftwaffe Aircrew Dagger Model 1935
The Luftwaffe Aircrew Dagger Model 1935 was the first standard edged weapon issued to officers and selected personnel of the German Luftwaffe. It was introduced shortly after the formation of the Luftwaffe and stylistically followed international aviation daggers as well as naval influences.
Typical features of the 1st Model include the blue leather-covered grip, the distinctive crossguard with stylized wings and the aluminium chain hanger. Early examples frequently display gilded emblems and higher-quality materials, emphasizing the representative character of these daggers.
Already in 1937, the aircrew dagger was replaced by the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937, making early examples of the Model 1935 especially desirable among collectors today.
