Luftwaffe Dagger [1937] with Hangers and Portepee by Carl Jul. Krebs Solingen
Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937 in the 2nd Model configuration, manufactured by Carl Jul. Krebs Solingen. The dagger has an overall length of approximately 42.5 cm and is preserved together with two-piece hangers and a short Luftwaffe portepee. The reverse side of the blade bears the maker marking “Carl Jul. Krebs Solingen”.
Grip & Crossguard: Round, orange-colored grip with convex fluting, curving outward in the typical form of the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937. In the lower area, below the grip ring, a section of the grip is chipped. The pommel is firmly screwed onto the tang and decorated on both sides with swastikas, which still retain gilding, as well as surrounding oak leaf ornamentation. The crossguard is executed in the form of the Luftwaffe eagle, facing left, with downward swept wing tips. In the center, the eagle holds a swastika in its claws. The reverse side of the crossguard has a granulated finish.
Blade: Double-edged, bright mirror-finished blade with maker marking on the reverse side: “Carl Jul. Krebs Solingen”. Between the blade shoulders and the lower crossguard is the original leather buffer washer. The clear maker marking, the very clean blade surface and the original leather washer are important features when identifying this Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger.
Scabbard: The scabbard is made from drawn sheet steel and displays the typical granulated surface texture on both front and reverse. It is fitted with a separately inserted throat piece. The scabbard has two oak leaf decorated suspension bands with loose, fully closed suspension rings. The tip of the scabbard is rounded and undamaged. The scabbard corresponds to the classic execution of the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937.
Hangers & Portepee: The dagger is preserved with two-piece Luftwaffe hangers and a short Luftwaffe portepee. These wearing accessories complete the representative appearance of the dagger and belong to the typical equipment of a Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger. Together with the orange-colored grip, granulated scabbard and maker-marked blade, the dagger forms a coherent ensemble.
Special Features: Especially noteworthy is the combination of Carl Jul. Krebs Solingen, orange-colored grip, bright mirror-finished blade with maker marking, original leather buffer washer, two-piece hangers, short Luftwaffe portepee and granulated scabbard. The chipped area below the grip ring should be taken into account when assessing the condition. Overall, this is a clearly attributable example of the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937 by a known Solingen maker with preserved wearing accessories.
Historical Background: Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937 by Carl Jul. Krebs Solingen
The Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937 was introduced as the second dagger pattern of the German Luftwaffe and replaced the earlier Luftwaffe Aircrew Dagger Model 1935 as the standard officer’s edged weapon. It was worn with dress and parade uniforms and served as a representative equipment item for Luftwaffe officers.
Characteristic features of the Model 1937 include the fluted grip, the spherical pommel with national emblems, the crossguard in the form of the Luftwaffe eagle and the granulated scabbard with two suspension rings. Depending on maker, production period and material execution, different detail variations occur in grips, fittings, scabbards, blades and wearing accessories.
Carl Jul. Krebs Solingen was one of the known Solingen manufacturers of edged weapons and daggers. The maker marking on the blade allows a clear attribution and is an essential feature when identifying Luftwaffe Officer’s Daggers.
The present dagger shows the classic design of the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937 with orange-colored grip, Luftwaffe eagle crossguard, original leather buffer washer, bright mirror-finished blade, granulated scabbard as well as preserved hangers and portepee. Together with the maker marking Carl Jul. Krebs Solingen, this is a clearly identifiable example of this officer dagger model.
