Luftwaffe Dagger [1937] with Portepee by WKC Solingen

Luftwaffe officer’s dagger according to the 1937 pattern (2nd model), manufactured by WKC – Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Cie., Solingen. The dagger is offered together with a short Luftwaffe portepee. The overall length is approx. 42.5 cm.

Grip: Orange, round grip with convex fluting. The grip is fitted with triple wire wrapping. The pommel is decorated on both sides with swastikas and oak leaf ornamentation and is screwed onto the tang. The crossguard features the typical Luftwaffe eagle, facing left, with the wing ends sweeping downward. The eagle holds a swastika in its talons. The reverse of the crossguard has a pebbled finish.

Blade: Bright blade in good preserved condition. The reverse bears the maker designation “WKC Solingen”. The original leather blade buffer is present between the blade shoulders and the lower crossguard.

Scabbard: Aircraft-grey steel scabbard, drawn from a single sheet of steel. Both sides show the typical pebbled surface texture. The scabbard has a throat and two oak leaf decorated scabbard bands, with two loose, fully closed suspension rings. The tip is rounded and undamaged. The throat is separately fitted and secured on the side with one screw.

Historical context: Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937

The Luftwaffe officer’s dagger Model 1937 was introduced as a ceremonial sidearm for officers of the German Luftwaffe. It was primarily worn for walking-out dress, social occasions and official events.

The 2nd model differs in details of the grip and scabbard design, as well as by the characteristic aircraft-grey finish of the scabbard. Makers such as WKC Solingen are regarded as established producers of these daggers.

Complete examples with portepee, a well-preserved blade and a coherent scabbard are sought-after collector’s items today within Luftwaffe and edged-weapon collections.
