Luftwaffe Dagger [M1935] with Damascus Blade & Portepee

Luftwaffe Aircrew Dagger Model 1935 (1st Model) in early production, with Damascus blade, chain hanger and portepee. The dagger has an overall length of approximately 48.5 cm and corresponds to the typical early configuration with blue leather-covered grip, broad blade shoulder area, chain hanger and original leather buffer washer. The total weight is approximately 555 g with hanger and portepee.

Grip: Grip with wooden core, covered with blue, age-darkened Saffian leather. The typical triple wire wrapping is present and sits cleanly in the grip grooves. The pommel is screwed onto the tang and displays the characteristic emblems of the Luftwaffe aircrew dagger on both sides. The grip fittings are made of silver-plated zinc, with the emblems cast as part of the fittings. The crossguard shows age-related patina and signs of use. The left wing of the crossguard shows visible breaks on both sides and was repaired in the past.

Blade: Double-edged Damascus blade in good condition with fully preserved tip. The Damascus pattern is clearly visible across the blade surface and shows a lively, circular or rosette-like structure. Between the blade shoulders and lower crossguard is the original leather buffer washer. The blade shoulders fit cleanly against the lower crossguard. The surface shows normal age- and storage-related traces, while the Damascus pattern remains clearly visible.

Scabbard: Three-piece scabbard with blue, age-darkened Saffian leather covering. The scabbard fittings are made of silver-plated steel and show age-appropriate patina. The scabbard appears straight and without noticeable dents or bulges. The fittings, throat piece and chape correspond to the early configuration of the Luftwaffe Aircrew Dagger Model 1935.

Hanger & Portepee: Original aluminium chain hanger in early configuration with 6 x 8 chain links. The snap hook is marked “Ges. Gesch.” and “OLC”. The hanger shows age-related patina, light carrying traces and a consistent aged surface. The portepee is attached to the dagger and completes the full wearing set.

Special Features: Luftwaffe Aircrew Daggers Model 1935 with Damascus blades represent an upgraded special version within early Luftwaffe edged weapons. Together with the chain hanger, portepee, original leather buffer washer and typical early construction, this is a particularly elaborate example of the first Luftwaffe dagger model. The repaired wing of the crossguard is explicitly mentioned and should be considered when assessing the condition.

Historical Background: Luftwaffe Aircrew Dagger Model 1935 with Damascus Blade

The Luftwaffe Aircrew Dagger Model 1935 was the first regular edged weapon of the newly established Luftwaffe. It was worn from the mid-1930s by officers and selected members of the Luftwaffe. Characteristic features of the 1st Model include the blue leather-covered grip, the broad horizontal crossguard, the screw-mounted pommel and the distinctive chain hanger.

In contrast to the later Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937, the Aircrew Dagger Model 1935 shows a stronger influence from early aviation and naval dagger designs. The blue leather covering, silver-plated fittings and aluminium chain hanger define the appearance of this early Luftwaffe pattern.

Damascus blades were used on edged weapons as a particularly elaborate and decorative execution. Through different steel structures and subsequent etching, the layered or patterned structure becomes visible on the surface. Depending on the method of manufacture, wavy, circular or rosette-like patterns may appear.

Damascus blades are encountered far less often on Luftwaffe daggers than standard blades. They were mainly used for higher-grade versions, presentation pieces or especially elaborate dagger configurations. This example combines the early form of the Model 1935 with a decorative Damascus blade, chain hanger and portepee, making it a special variant within Luftwaffe aircrew daggers.
