Luftwaffe Dagger [1937] by E. & F. Hörster Solingen
Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937 in the 2nd Model configuration, manufactured by E. & F. Hörster Solingen. The dagger has an overall length of approximately 42.6 cm. The reverse side of the blade bears the maker marking “E. & F. Hörster, Solingen”. This dagger corresponds to the classic configuration of the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger with white grip, original double wire wrapping, Luftwaffe eagle crossguard, bright double-edged blade, original leather buffer washer and granulated scabbard.
Grip & Crossguard: White grip with original double wire wrapping. The fluting is convex, curving outward, and corresponds to the typical grip design of the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937. The spherical pommel is firmly screwed onto the tang and decorated on both sides with sun wheels as well as detailed oak leaf ornamentation. Partly, traces of the original gilding are still present. The crossguard shows the typical Luftwaffe eagle, facing left, with elegantly downward swept wing tips. In its claws, the eagle holds a swastika. The reverse side of the crossguard has a finely granulated finish.
Blade: Double-edged, bright blade with maker marking on the reverse side: “E. & F. Hörster, Solingen”. Between the blade shoulders and the lower crossguard is the original, well-preserved leather buffer washer. The clear maker marking, bright blade surface and original leather washer are important features when identifying this Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger.
Scabbard: The scabbard is made from one piece of drawn sheet steel and displays the typical granulated surface texture on both front and reverse. It is fitted with two oak leaf decorated suspension bands and two fully closed suspension rings. The tip is rounded and undamaged. The separately inserted throat piece is secured by two side screws. The scabbard corresponds to the classic execution of the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937.
Special Features: Especially noteworthy is the combination of E. & F. Hörster Solingen, white grip with original double wire wrapping, pommel with traces of gilding, bright maker-marked blade, original leather buffer washer and granulated scabbard with two side screws at the throat piece. This dagger is a clearly attributable example of the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937 by a known Solingen maker.
Historical Background: Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937 by E. & F. Hörster Solingen
The Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937 was introduced as the second dagger pattern of the German Luftwaffe and replaced the earlier Luftwaffe Aircrew Dagger Model 1935 as the standard officer’s edged weapon. It was worn with dress and parade uniforms and served as a representative equipment item for Luftwaffe officers.
Characteristic features of the Model 1937 include the round fluted grip, the spherical pommel with national emblems, the crossguard in the form of the Luftwaffe eagle and the granulated scabbard with two suspension rings. Depending on maker, production period and material execution, different detail variations occur in grips, fittings, scabbards, blades and wearing accessories.
E. & F. Hörster Solingen was one of the known Solingen manufacturers of edged weapons and daggers. The maker marking on the blade allows a clear attribution and is an essential feature when identifying Luftwaffe Officer’s Daggers.
The present dagger shows the classic design of the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937 with white grip, original double wire wrapping, Luftwaffe eagle crossguard, original leather buffer washer, maker-marked blade and granulated scabbard. Together with the maker marking E. & F. Hörster Solingen, this is a clearly identifiable example of this officer dagger model.
