Luftwaffe Dagger [M1935] with Hangers by WKC Solingen

Luftwaffe Dagger Model 1935 in early production, manufactured by WKC Solingen. The dagger has an overall length of approximately 49.0 cm. The reverse side of the blade bears the maker marking “WKC Solingen”. This early Luftwaffe dagger is executed with blue Saffian leather on the grip and scabbard and represents the characteristic early dagger form of the Luftwaffe.

Grip & Pommel: The grip has a wooden core and is covered with blue Saffian leather. The grip wire wrapping is missing. The pommel is firmly screwed onto the tang and decorated on both sides with sun wheels. The blue leather-covered grip corresponds to the early design of the Luftwaffe Dagger Model 1935.

Blade: The reverse side of the blade bears the maker marking “WKC Solingen”. The blade shoulders fit cleanly and precisely against the crossguard. Between the blade shoulders and the lower crossguard is the blue leather buffer washer. The maker marking allows a clear attribution to WKC Solingen and is an important feature when identifying this early Luftwaffe dagger.

Scabbard: The scabbard is executed in three-piece construction and is covered with blue Saffian leather. This scabbard form belongs to the typical early execution of the Luftwaffe Dagger Model 1935. The blue leather-covered scabbard visually complements the grip and gives the dagger the characteristic appearance of early Luftwaffe daggers.

Special Features: Especially noteworthy is the combination of early production, maker WKC Solingen, blue Saffian leather on grip and scabbard, blue leather buffer washer, cleanly fitting blade shoulders and three-piece scabbard. The missing grip wire wrapping should be taken into account when assessing the condition. Overall, this is a clearly attributable example of the early Luftwaffe Dagger Model 1935 by WKC Solingen.

Historical Background: Luftwaffe Dagger Model 1935 by WKC Solingen

The Luftwaffe Dagger Model 1935 was the early dagger form of the German Luftwaffe and was worn mainly by flying personnel as well as Luftwaffe officers. It was not intended as a combat knife, but as a representative edged weapon for dress and parade uniforms.

Characteristic features of the early dagger include the leather-covered grip, the distinctive fitting design, the screw-mounted pommel and the three-piece scabbard. The execution with blue leather on grip and scabbard is one of the typical features of this early Luftwaffe dagger form.

WKC Solingen was one of the known Solingen manufacturers of German edged weapons. The maker marking on the blade allows a clear attribution and is an essential feature when identifying early Luftwaffe daggers.

The present dagger shows the early design of the Model 1935 with blue Saffian leather, maker marking, blue leather buffer washer and three-piece scabbard. In this configuration, it is an interesting example of an early Luftwaffe dagger by WKC Solingen.
