Luftwaffe Dagger [M1937] with Portepee by AWS Alcoso, Solingen

This 2nd Model Luftwaffe is in EXC+ condition throughout. This 2nd Model Luftwaffe Dagger has good airplane gray darkened fittings throughout. The pommel appears to still have traces of the original finish over the obverse swastika, but it is work on the reverse. It has good oak leaves around the double circles which enclose the swastikas on both sides. Model 1937. The total length is 43.3 cm. The Dagger has the maker mark on the blade: AWS Alcoso, Solingen.

Grip: The grip of this dagger is an off-white example. It is wrapped with a thin twisted brass wire. The crossguards have matching toned aluminum, featuring an eagle which flies to the viewer's left and clutches a mobile swastika in his talons. This bird shows only modest signs of usage on the feathering. The reverse pebbled pattern is still good, with most of the factory blackening intact. The upper quillon arms have the engraved oak leaves and acorns, with good treatment over the leaves, being a shaded style rendering. The ferrule matches the other hilt fittings. Setting off the fine hilt is an original luftwaffe short portepee.

Blade: The blade still grades at about excellent plus. The reverse ricasso is etched with the trademark used from 1937-1939. This trademark consists of a set of scales which have the firm’s initials interspersed, “AWS”. Beside the scales the firm’s name is written, “Alcoso”. Beneath is the location city of “Solingen”.

Scabbard: The scabbard is a generic style, having a good, airplane gray finish and showing just a little bit of age. The bands feature the oak leaves that are positioned at 45 degree angles, being done in a white metal. The thin throat is retained by a side headless screw in the center reverse.
