Spain Falange Youth Hiking Knife by SEAM

Rare hiking knife of the Spanish youth organization “Falange” (Falange Española de las JONS), manufactured by SEAM and dated 1936/8. These knives were worn by members of the Falangist youth movement and are clearly inspired in construction and appearance by contemporary German HJ hiking knives.

Grip: Nickel-plated steel grip with riveted black synthetic grip plates (Bakelite-like) featuring a pronounced herringbone pattern. The crossguard is single-sidedly curved and firmly seated. At the center of the grip is the originally inserted Falange emblem, which is fully preserved. Distinct age-related wear, overall an authentic condition.

Blade: Single-edged steel blade showing light surface corrosion consistent with age. The blade bears the maker and date marking “SEAM 1936/8”. The blade is originally riveted into the grip and sits firmly. No major damage visible.

Scabbard: Steel scabbard with blackened finish. The surface shows typical signs of age and use, however no dents or deformation. The original leather hanger is present.

Historical Background: Falange Youth & Hiking Knives

The Falange Española de las JONS was the fascist mass movement of Spain, playing a central political role during the Spanish Civil War and the early Franco era.

Similar to other authoritarian youth organizations in Europe, the Falange maintained its own youth formations, equipped with uniforms, insignia and specific items of equipment. Hiking knives formed part of this outward appearance.

Falange hiking knives closely follow the design and construction of German HJ knives of the 1930s. Typical features include a simple steel blade, riveted synthetic grip plates and a steel scabbard with leather hanger.

Today, examples of this type are highly sought after by collectors, as they document the connection between political youth movements, uniform culture and period field equipment.
