Historical Context: Swiss officer’s dagger, 1943 pattern

The Swiss officer’s dagger, pattern 1943 is one of the characteristic sidearms of the Swiss Army in the 20th century. In contrast to the highly decorative officer’s daggers of many other countries, this model emphasizes a more practical and restrained design, which fits well with the Swiss military tradition.

Typical features of the model include the plain curved crossguard, the two-piece wood grip scales, and the clear, functional lines of blade and scabbard. Precisely this restrained design language gives the dagger collector interest today, as it clearly differs from more representational edged weapons of other nations.

The maker Elsener, Schwyz is among the best-known names in the field of Swiss edged weapons and knife production. Original officer’s daggers with preserved serial number, clean blade, matching scabbard, and complete hanger and portepee are desirable collector’s items, since they preserve the typical method of wear and the full appearance of this sidearm especially well.
