RLB EM Dagger [M1936] by SMF Solingen

Unterführer dagger of the Reichsluftschutzbund (RLB) of the 1936 pattern. The blade is marked by the maker SMF Solingen. The overall length is approx. 36.8 cm. A characteristic example of the organizational edged weapons of the Reichsluftschutzbund in coherent condition.

Grip: Black wooden grip fitted with the applied Luftschutz emblem. The crossguard is straight and ribbed at the sides; in the center is the RLB eagle facing to the right and holding a swastika in its claws. The dagger is held together by a pommel screwed at the upper end of the grip. Both pommel and crossguard are made of aluminium.

Blade: Bright blade in good preserved condition. On the reverse is the maker’s mark “SMF Solingen”. Overall the blade presents well and fits precisely into the crossguard area.

Scabbard: Iron scabbard. The scabbard fitting is made of nickel-plated sheet steel and is secured laterally by two screws. A simple and functional configuration fully in line with the model.

Historical Context: Reichsluftschutzbund Unterführer dagger, 1936 pattern

The Reichsluftschutzbund (RLB) dagger of the 1936 pattern belongs to the characteristic edged weapons of the organizational air-raid protection system in Germany. It was intended for members of the Reichsluftschutzbund and differs clearly in design from standard military daggers of the period.

Typical features of these pieces include the black wooden grip, the applied Luftschutz emblem, the distinctive crossguard with the RLB eagle, and the overall clear, functional design. This combination of organizational symbolism and restrained form is what makes the RLB dagger especially appealing to collectors.

Makers such as SMF Solingen are among the recognized producers of these organizational daggers. Well-preserved examples with clean emblem, clear maker mark and matching scabbard are sought-after, since they preserve the characteristic appearance of the RLB Unterführer dagger particularly well.
