Red Cross Officer's Dagger [M1938] with Hangers & Knot

DRK Leader’s dagger (German Red Cross) of the 1938 pattern, complete with portepee and two-piece hanger. The overall length is approx. 38.3 cm. A characteristic example of German Red Cross leader equipment in a coherent complete set.

Grip: Nickel-finished hilt with an elliptical pommel and a yellow-colored synthetic grip. The crossguard is formed with a medallion showing the DRK eagle facing left, holding the DRK cross in its claws. Beneath the crossguard is the correct buffer pad.

Blade: Double-edged, mirror-bright blade with visible crossgrain. The blade is unmarked. Overall a very appealing and clean example with strong visual presence.

Scabbard: The scabbard consists of a separate throat piece and two smooth bands with square suspension loops. It is drawn from one piece of sheet steel and shows the typical pebbled surface texture on both front and reverse. The tip is plain. The throat is separately fitted and secured with two side screws.

Hanger / Portepee: The dagger is offered together with a matching two-piece hanger and portepee. This combination underlines the completeness and collector appeal of this DRK leader’s dagger.

Historical Context: DRK Leader’s dagger, 1938 pattern

The German Red Cross leader’s dagger of the 1938 pattern is one of the distinctive edged weapons of the organizational and uniformed sector of the period. Its design combines a classic dagger form with a clearly visible DRK identity, especially through the medallion in the crossguard and the characteristic overall construction.

Typical features of these daggers include the light synthetic grip, the double-edged blade, and the plain but characteristic scabbard with square suspension loops and pebbled texture. Collectors especially value complete examples with matching hanger and portepee, since they best reflect the original period manner of wear.

Unmarked blades are not unusual on DRK daggers. More important for evaluation are overall condition, consistency of the fittings, execution of the crossguard, shape of the scabbard, and quality of the accompanying accessories. In complete form, these DRK leader’s daggers remain decorative and collector-relevant pieces within the broader field of period edged weapons.
