Historical Context: DRK enlisted hewer, 1938 pattern

The DRK hewer for enlisted ranks of the 1938 pattern is among the characteristic edged weapons of the German Red Cross within the organizational and uniformed sphere of the period. In contrast to the leader’s daggers, the enlisted hewer shows a more robust and functional form with single-edged blade, sawback and the typical method of wear on a belt frog.

Defining features of these hewers include the black scabbard, the DRK eagle medallion on the crossguard and the strong blade form. The sawback version and its clear lines distinguish the enlisted hewer from purely representative dagger models and give it a very characteristic appearance of its own.

For collectors, complete sets with original belt frog are especially desirable, since this accessory clearly documents the original method of wear. Reverse markings such as “Wunderlich Nachf. Berlin 1934” further support the classification of the accessory and make intact combinations of this type especially attractive.
