Historical Context: The Bahnschutz and the Deutsche Reichsbahn
The Bahnschutz (“Railway Protection Corps”) was a security and
protective organization of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (German National Railway),
established during the 1930s. Its main task was to protect railway lines,
stations, and transport routes from sabotage, espionage, and theft.
After the nationalization of the Reichsbahn in 1937,
the Bahnschutz became part of the police system. Officers of this organization
carried the Railway Protection Leader Dagger – a symbolic and
ceremonial edged weapon featuring the distinctive winged railway wheel emblem.
The Model 1938 (2nd Type) was manufactured from lightweight aluminum
and is among the rarest variants of its kind. Well-preserved examples such as this
are now highly sought after by collectors of historical edged weapons.
