Railway Protection Leader’s Dagger [M1935] with Hanger by WKC Solingen
Railway Protection Leader’s Dagger Model 1935 with matching two-piece hanger, manufactured by Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Cie. / WKC Solingen. The dagger has an overall length of approximately 39.5 cm and corresponds to the characteristic configuration for leaders of the railway protection service with black grip, eagle-shaped crossguard, granulated scabbard and silver-colored hanger. The total weight is approximately 403 g with hanger.
Grip & Crossguard: Black Trolon grip with double-twisted, convex fluting. The conical pommel is firmly screwed onto the tang and decorated with surrounding oak leaf ornamentation. At the lower end of the grip is the typical decorative grip ring with oak leaves arranged side by side. The crossguard shows the left-facing national eagle with downward swept wings. In its claws, the eagle holds a wreath with swastika. The curled ends of the crossguard correspond to the typical design of this dagger model.
Blade: Double-edged, bright blade in clean preservation with fully preserved tip. The reverse side bears the maker marking with knight’s head logo and WKC Solingen. Between the blade shoulders and crossguard is the leather buffer washer. The blade shoulders fit cleanly against the crossguard.
Scabbard: The scabbard is made of sheet steel and has a fine, even granulated surface texture. The throat fitting is separately inserted and secured on the reverse with a screw. The scabbard is fitted with two suspension bands and fully closed suspension rings. The tip is rounded and corresponds to the typical form of the Railway Protection Leader’s Dagger Model 1935.
Hanger: The dagger comes with a two-piece railway protection hanger with silver-colored carrying straps, black center stripe and fabric backing on the reverse. The metal fittings are made in aluminium execution and decorated with fine oak leaf ornamentation. The oval slides, buckles and snap hooks correspond to the decorative execution of this carrying accessory.
Special Features: The Railway Protection Leader’s Dagger Model 1935 belongs to the special service daggers of state or semi-state organizations of the 1930s. The combination of WKC Solingen, black Trolon grip, knight’s head maker mark, granulated scabbard and matching two-piece hanger forms a complete-looking ensemble within railway protection edged weapons.
Historical Background: Railway Protection Leader’s Dagger Model 1935
The railway protection service was responsible for security and order-related duties within the railway system. Its tasks included the protection of railway facilities, transport routes, stations and operationally important installations. Special service daggers were introduced for leaders of the railway protection service, with a design that followed contemporary state service daggers.
The Railway Protection Leader’s Dagger Model 1935 is characterized by its black grip, eagle-shaped crossguard, oak leaf decorated pommel and granulated scabbard. The design combines elements of classic officer’s daggers with specific features of the railway protection service. The matching hanger formed part of the representative wearing equipment and was worn with the service or dress uniform.
Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Cie. / WKC Solingen was one of the well-known Solingen manufacturers of edged weapons, daggers and military equipment. The WKC knight’s head mark is among the recognized maker logos found on German daggers and sidearms.
Railway Protection Leader’s Daggers are encountered considerably less often than regular Army or Luftwaffe officer’s daggers. Examples with clearly visible maker marking, matching scabbard and complete hanger are especially informative for collectors, as they document the original wearing method and equipment context.
