NPEA Chained Leader Dagger [M1935] by Karl Burgsmüller Berlin
Rare NPEA Chain Dagger for Leaders of the National Political Educational Institutes (NPEA), Model 1935. This example is complete with its original chain hanger, reverse etched with the distributor mark “Karl Burgsmüller, Berlin”, and correct scabbard. The overall length measures approx. 37.5 cm. A highly desirable and historically significant edged weapon.
Grip: Carefully shaped brown wooden grip with pronounced central ridge and vertical grain structure. The NPEA eagle emblem, made of nickel silver, is perfectly inset, correctly positioned and has never been removed. Both crossguards are manufactured from nickel silver. The grip fits tightly and flush between the guards, indicating original factory assembly.
Blade: Double-edged, polished blade in good preserved condition. The obverse features the deeply etched NPEA motto “Mehr sein als scheinen”. The reverse ricasso bears the distributor mark “Karl Burgsmüller, Berlin”. Blade shoulders seat precisely into the lower crossguard.
Scabbard: Straight steel scabbard with intact original olive-green paint finish, free from dents or deformation. Fitted with three nickel-plated mounts. The paint shows a uniform and authentic surface appearance.
Chain hanger: Original chain configuration with 6 upper and 9 lower links. The snap hook is stamped “OLG” and “Ges. Gesch.”. The chain is correctly mounted to the upper and center scabbard bands, consistent with known period examples.
Historical Context: NPEA Chain Dagger Model 1935
The National Political Educational Institutes (NPEA), also known as “Napolas,” served as elite training schools for future political and military leadership. In 1935, a distinct service dagger with chain hanger was introduced for NPEA leaders, differing clearly from SA and SS models.
Characteristic features include the unique motto “Mehr sein als scheinen”, the specific scabbard construction, and the chain suspension system. Examples bearing the distributor mark Karl Burgsmüller, Berlin represent documented and period-correct distribution channels.
Due to limited production numbers and short service use, NPEA chain daggers are today considered rare and highly sought-after within advanced Third Reich edged weapon collections. Complete, well-preserved examples with original chain hangers possess significant historical and collector value.
