Historical Context: Kriegsmarine officer dagger, 1938 pattern

The Kriegsmarine officer dagger of the 1938 pattern is among the most recognizable edged weapons of German naval officers. Its form follows earlier naval dagger traditions, but within the Kriegsmarine period it continued with distinct details such as the eagle pommel, maritime blade etching and the characteristic lightning scabbard.

The etched naval motifs on both sides of the blade, including anchors and other maritime elements, are among the most attractive features of these daggers. Such decorated blades combined representational character with branch identity and still give these pieces a particularly elegant appearance today.

Makers such as WKC, Solingen are among the established producers of these officer daggers. Well-preserved examples with functioning release button, clean blade, matching lightning scabbard and original portepee are especially sought-after, since they preserve the overall impression of the dagger’s original method of wear.
