Luftwaffe Paratrooper Gravity Knife 2nd Model – R.B.Nr. 0/0561/0019 – SMF Solingen

Luftwaffe Paratrooper Gravity Knife, 2nd Model, marked with R.B.Nr. 0/0561/0019 and attributed to the maker SMF Solingen. This knife belongs to the later production type of the German paratrooper and aircrew gravity knife. It was issued as a functional equipment item for Luftwaffe paratroopers and flying personnel. The use of an R.B.Nr. instead of a traditional maker mark is characteristic of later wartime production.

Grip & Housing: The knife shows the typical grip and body construction of the 2nd Model Fallschirm-Kappmesser. The grip plates are mounted on both sides and fit neatly to the metal body. The carrying loop is firmly riveted and corresponds to the practical service configuration. The construction is compact, functional and designed for quick handling.

Blade: Single-edged sliding blade in the typical form of a Luftwaffe gravity knife. The blade is released by gravity and operated by the side release lever. The blade bears the marking R.B.Nr. 0/0561/0019, which is attributed to SMF Solingen. This R.B.Nr. marking is an important feature for identifying the later production period and replaces the earlier open maker designation.

Marlinspike / Awl: The knife is fitted with the typical folding marlinspike, also referred to as an awl. This tool was used for loosening knots, lines and bindings. It is one of the characteristic functional elements of the Fallschirm-Kappmesser. The combination of sliding blade and marlinspike made this knife a practical tool for paratroopers and aircrew personnel.

Special Features: Especially noteworthy is the configuration as a 2nd Model Luftwaffe Paratrooper Gravity Knife with the R.B.Nr. 0/0561/0019 and attribution to SMF Solingen. Gravity knives of this type are sought-after Luftwaffe edged weapons and equipment pieces, as they served a clearly functional purpose and are closely connected with the equipment of German airborne troops.

Blade with R.B.Nr. 0/0561/0019 on Luftwaffe Paratrooper Gravity Knife by SMF Solingen

Historical Background: Luftwaffe Paratrooper Gravity Knife 2nd Model with R.B.Nr. 0/0561/0019

The Fallschirm-Kappmesser was developed as a special equipment knife for paratroopers and flying personnel of the Luftwaffe. Its main purpose was to allow lines, straps or entanglements to be loosened or cut quickly. The sliding blade could be opened one-handed by gravity, which provided a practical advantage in emergency situations.

The 2nd Model represents the later production variant of this knife type. Compared with earlier versions, the construction and production details were simplified and adapted more strongly to wartime manufacturing requirements. Markings with an R.B.Nr. are typical for this later phase and were used for coded identification of manufacturers.

The R.B.Nr. 0/0561/0019 is attributed to the Solingen maker SMF. SMF was one of the known manufacturers of German edged weapons and service knives. For Fallschirm-Kappmesser examples, the maker or R.B.Nr., blade type, marlinspike, grip plates and function are important features for collector identification.

The present piece combines the typical features of a 2nd Model Fallschirm-Kappmesser: sliding blade, side release mechanism, folding marlinspike, carrying loop and R.B.Nr. marking. It is therefore a historically classifiable Luftwaffe equipment item from the field of German airborne edged weapons.
