Luftwaffe Dagger [1937] with Hangers and Knot
Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937 (2nd Model) with hanger and portepee. The overall length is approximately 43.2 cm. The dagger represents the classic configuration for Luftwaffe officers, featuring a light-colored grip, eagle-shaped crossguard and oak leaf decorated fittings. The piece is offered together with a two-piece hanger and matching Luftwaffe portepee.
Grip: Light-colored grip with characteristic triple wire wrapping. The fluting is convex in form and curves outward. The pommel is decorated on both sides with the characteristic sun wheels and oak leaf ornamentation, and is screwed onto the tang. The crossguard is formed as a Luftwaffe eagle, facing left, with downward extending wings. The eagle holds a swastika in its claws. The reverse side of the crossguard features the typical granulated finish. Age-related wear and patina are present.
Blade: Double-edged blade in age-appropriate condition with fully preserved tip. The blade is unmarked, as occasionally encountered on period Luftwaffe officer’s daggers. Between the blade shoulders and crossguard is the leather buffer washer. The surface displays normal age- and storage-related traces.
Scabbard: The scabbard is constructed from drawn sheet steel and displays the typical granulated surface texture on both front and reverse. Fitted with a throat fitting and two oak leaf decorated suspension bands, each with loose, fully closed suspension rings. The throat piece is separately inserted and secured by a screw on the reverse. The tip of the scabbard is rounded and free from visible damage.
Historical Background: Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937
The Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937 was introduced as a ceremonial and representative sidearm for officers of the German Luftwaffe. It replaced the earlier Luftwaffe Aircrew Dagger Model 1935 for regular officer wear and stylistically followed traditional European officer daggers.
Characteristic features of the 2nd Model include the light-colored grip with wire wrapping, the eagle-shaped crossguard and the pommel decorated with sun wheels. Depending on manufacturer and production period, numerous detail variations exist in materials, finishes and construction.
Luftwaffe officer’s daggers were primarily worn for official occasions, parades and representative service, and remain among the classic edged weapons of the German Luftwaffe.
