Luftwaffe Funeral Dagger [1937] with Hangers and Portepee by Robert Klaas Solingen
Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger, Model 1937 – 2nd Model, the so-called “mourning dagger” with black grip. Total length: 42.3 cm. Maker: Robert Klaas, Solingen (ricasso stamped with the “Kissing Cranes” trademark and name). A very scarce example, as black grips on Luftwaffe and Army daggers by Klaas are extremely rare. Complete with two-piece hanger and portepee.
Grip: The grip is made of black Trolon (synthetic material) with a rounded profile and convex fluting. It is wrapped with twisted aluminum wire. The spherical pommel displays gilt swastikas on both sides, framed by oak-leaf decoration over a fine pebbled background. The pommel is firmly screwed onto the tang and topped with a flat circular cap. The crossguard shows the characteristic Luftwaffe eagle, facing left, wings sweeping downward, clutching a swastika in its talons. The reverse is finely pebbled.
Blade: The double-edged blade remains in very fine condition, showing only light runner marks and minor age traces. The tip is sharp and fully intact. The ricasso is stamped with “ROBERT KLAAS SOLINGEN” and the Kissing Cranes logo. Between the blade shoulders and the lower crossguard sits the original brown leather buffer pad, well preserved.
Scabbard: The matching scabbard is made from one piece of steel with fine pebbled surface texture, retaining much of its airplane-gray finish. Fitted with two oak-leaf decorated bands and closed suspension rings. The rounded tip is undamaged. The throat is separately inserted and secured with a screw.
