DDR / NVA Admiral’s Dagger – Presentation Piece “Presented by the Minister for State Security”

Exceptionally rare and highly representative example of an NVA Admiral’s Dagger of the East German Volksmarine. Fully gilded presentation version. This dagger was bestowed as an official presentation gift and carries the rare inscription: “Presented by the Minister for State Security”. Such award pieces are extremely scarce and count among the most prestigious edged weapons of the DDR era.

Grip: White plastic grip of the Admiral’s pattern with gilded pommel and gilded crossguards. The pommel features the finely detailed Volksmarine anchor emblem. All fittings retain their strong, original gilding without wear – workmanship typical for a high-level presentation piece.

Blade: Double-edged, nickel-plated presentation blade in excellent condition. Bright, clean, mirror-like throughout. The obverse bears the finely executed presentation inscription: “Presented by the Minister for State Security”. Such personalized presentation daggers were reserved for exceptional service or internal awards within the Ministry for State Security and the Volksmarine command structure.

Scabbard: Fully gilded metal scabbard with finely detailed oak-leaf decorative bands. Surface perfectly preserved, without dents or abrasions. The gilded fittings are tightly assembled, and the side suspension ring is correctly positioned and matches the original finish.

Hanger: Original Admiral’s gold brocade hanger with dark-blue fabric backing – the highest grade used by the Volksmarine. All metal parts retain their gilding and function perfectly. A fully authentic and complete high-ranking presentation ensemble.

Historical Context: Volksmarine Admiral’s Daggers & MfS Presentation Pieces

The Admiral’s Dagger of the Volksmarine represented the highest grade of East German dress daggers. Gilded fittings, brocade hangers and ornate scabbards made this model a prestige symbol for senior naval leadership.

Even rarer are presentation daggers awarded for exceptional merit. The inscription “Presented by the Minister for State Security” indicates a high-level, politically significant award – likely to high-ranking naval, state security, or allied personnel.

Pieces of this nature belong to the rarest and most desirable DDR edged weapons, with only very few surviving examples known.
