Army Officer’s Dagger with Knot & Hangers
German Army Officer’s Dagger Model 1935 for officers of the German Army, together with portepee, two-piece hanger and badges from the wearer’s family. The dagger has an overall length of approximately 40.0 cm and corresponds to the classic configuration of the Army Officer’s Dagger with yellowish Trolon grip, oak leaf decorated fittings, granulated scabbard, clean blade and original leather buffer washer. Together with the wearing accessories and the associated badges, the piece forms an attractive ensemble connected with the original wearer’s family.
Grip & Crossguard: Round Trolon grip in yellowish coloration with double-twisted, convex fluting. The fluting curves outward and corresponds to the typical form of the German Army Officer’s Dagger Model 1935. The conical pommel is firmly screwed onto the tang and decorated with surrounding oak leaf ornamentation. At the lower end of the grip is the typical decorative grip ring with oak leaves arranged side by side. The crossguard is executed in the form of the Army eagle, facing left, with downward swept wing tips. In its claws, the eagle holds a wreath with swastika.
Blade: Double-edged, very clean blade with fully visible crossgrain. The blade tip is preserved and the blade appears unshortened. Between the blade shoulders and the lower crossguard is the original leather buffer washer. The well-preserved crossgrain and the clean blade surface are especially noteworthy and underline the fine preservation of this German Army Officer’s Dagger.
Scabbard: The scabbard is made from drawn sheet steel and displays the typical granulated surface texture on both front and reverse. Fitted with a separately inserted throat piece, secured with two screws. The scabbard has two oak leaf decorated suspension bands with loose, fully closed suspension rings. The tip of the scabbard is rounded and not dented. The execution corresponds to the classic scabbard form of the German Army Officer’s Dagger Model 1935.
Hanger, Portepee & Badges: The dagger comes with a two-piece hanger and an attached portepee. Both complete the wearing equipment of the German Army Officer’s Dagger. In addition, badges from the wearer’s family are included, so the dagger is preserved not only as a single piece, but as a related ensemble with personal background. Such accompanying items add documentary character and are of particular collector interest, as they place the dagger in a broader historical context.
Special Features: Especially noteworthy is the combination of yellowish Trolon grip, very clean blade with fully visible crossgrain, original leather buffer washer, granulated scabbard, portepee, two-piece hanger and the associated badges from the wearer’s family. This makes the piece a particularly decorative and collector-relevant ensemble of the German Army Officer’s Dagger Model 1935.
Historical Background: German Army Officer’s Dagger Model 1935 with Wearing Accessories
The German Army Officer’s Dagger Model 1935 was introduced as a representative edged weapon for officers of the German Army. It formed part of the dress and parade uniform and was not intended as a combat knife, but as a rank and representation item within the officer’s equipment.
Typical features of this dagger model include the fluted grip, the conical pommel with oak leaf decoration, the crossguard with Army eagle and the granulated scabbard with two oak leaf decorated suspension bands. Depending on maker, production period and material execution, numerous variations exist in grip material, grip color, fittings, blade markings and wearing accessories.
The portepee and the two-piece hanger belonged to the representative wearing configuration of the German Army Officer’s Dagger. While the dagger itself formed the central piece, hanger and portepee were important additions to the complete uniform equipment. Preserved ensembles with dagger, scabbard, hanger and portepee are especially appealing to collectors, as they make the original wearing configuration easier to understand.
Included badges from the wearer’s family can broaden the historical context of a piece. They do not automatically turn the dagger into a fully documented estate, but they add additional collector and documentary character to the ensemble. In this combination, the result is a decorative set of the German Army Officer’s Dagger Model 1935 with preserved wearing accessories and additional badges.
