Wehrmacht SG42 Bayonet [Fighting Knife 42] by cof / Carl Eickhorn Solingen

Wehrmacht SG42 bayonet, also known as Combat Knife 42 or Infantry Knife 42, manufactured by Carl Eickhorn Solingen with maker code “cof”. This example features a single-edged blade, an integrated removable tool set in the grip and a scabbard with metal belt clip. The length is approximately 318 mm, the weight approximately 488 g. The condition is listed as condition grade 2.

Grip: Dark brown to black-brown grip panels with ribbed surface and lateral finger grooves. The grip contains the typical compartment for the removable tool set. The grip panels show age-related handling and storage traces, minor scratches and an age-appropriate surface. The metal parts show patina and normal carrying wear. The locking mechanism and release button are present.

Blade: Single-edged blade with preserved tip and wedge-shaped profile. The blade shows a bright surface with age- and storage-related traces, fine scratches and areas of patina. At the blade base are the markings “cof” for Carl Eickhorn Solingen as well as the Waffenamt stamp WaA519. According to the available information, the leather washer / leather stopper has been replaced.

Tool Set: The grip contains the removable multi-purpose tool set. It includes, among other tools, a screwdriver, small blade, awl and corkscrew. The tools show clear age-related patina, signs of use and surface aging. According to the available information, the marking “1tk” for Robert Klaas, Solingen is faintly visible on the tool parts.

Scabbard: Black scabbard in typical SG42 configuration with attached metal belt clip. The scabbard shows age-related scratches, surface wear and carrying traces. The metal clip is preserved and shows patina as well as normal surface aging. The compact scabbard form corresponds to the practical construction of this rare multi-purpose bayonet.

Special Features: The SG42 differs significantly from the standard 84/98 bayonets. It combines the function of a mountable bayonet with that of a combat knife and a simple multi-purpose tool. The combination of maker code cof / Carl Eickhorn Solingen, Waffenamt stamp WaA519, tool set, scabbard and metal belt clip makes this a clearly attributable and rarely encountered example of the SG42.

Historical Background: Wehrmacht SG42 Bayonet / Combat Knife 42

The SG42 bayonet, also referred to as the Combat Knife 42 or Infantry Knife 42, was developed during the Second World War as a combined bayonet, combat knife and multi-purpose tool. It was intended to supplement the well-known 84/98 bayonet while also meeting the need for practical utility knives in everyday military use.

The design combined a single-edged blade with a grip that housed a removable tool set. This tool set could be used, among other purposes, for simple maintenance and repair tasks. The guard and grip construction were designed with function in mind and underline the multi-purpose character of the SG42.

The SG42 was produced only in comparatively limited numbers and is today considerably rarer than the regular 84/98 bayonet. Known examples include pieces with the maker code “cof” for Carl Eickhorn Solingen and the Waffenamt stamp WaA519. The tool sets are often associated with Robert Klaas, Solingen.

Due to its special construction, the SG42 stands at the transition from the classic bayonet to the modern mountable multi-purpose knife. This example with tool set, scabbard and metal belt clip documents this rare and technically interesting development within German edged weapons of the 1940s.
