Navy Officer Dagger [2nd Model] by Carl Eickhorn Solingen
Very well preserved German Navy (Kriegsmarine) Officer’s Dagger Model 1938 with maker marking on the blade Carl Eickhorn, Solingen. The total length is approximately 42.3 cm. The dagger is offered together with the original portepee and a two-piece hanger. This is a classic officer example with gilt fittings and etched blade decoration.
Grip: Light-colored grip in slightly oval shape with double wire wrapping. Crossguard and pommel are made of gilt non-ferrous metal. Beneath the crossguard the original felt buffer is present. The pommel is formed as a naval eagle holding a wreath with swastika in its claws.
Blade: Double-edged blade in very good condition with intact tip. Both sides feature etched naval decoration with typical maritime motifs. The reverse is marked “Carl Eickhorn Solingen”. Above the logo is the functional release button.
Scabbard: Gilt lightning scabbard with decorative oak-leaf suspension bands. The throat is secured with two side screws, which remain untouched. Both suspension rings are closed.
Historical Background: Kriegsmarine Officer’s Dagger Model 1938
The Kriegsmarine Officer’s Dagger Model 1938 was introduced as the ceremonial sidearm for officers of the German Navy. Its design consciously followed historic naval traditions, combining maritime symbolism with contemporary state emblems.
Characteristic features include the eagle pommel, etched naval blade decoration, and the ornate lightning scabbard. Solingen manufacturers, particularly Carl Eickhorn, were among the leading producers of these officer weapons.
Complete examples with original hanger and portepee are especially desirable to collectors, as they authentically document the original wearing configuration of naval officer equipment.
