Wehrmacht Bayonet M 84/98 III Pattern by (42 cof) – Carl Eickhorn Solingen
Wehrmacht Bayonet 84/98, III pattern, matching numbers with scabbard, maker code “42 cof” for Carl Eickhorn Solingen. The bayonet bears the stamped number 849, which is present on both the blade and the scabbard. Included is a matching leather frog, marked C. Riese, Berlin SO 16, 1940. The overall length is approximately 405 mm.
Grip: Grip with black-brown Bakelite grip plates, secured by two screws. The press button is present, marked WaA883 and functions properly. Further Waffenamt acceptance stamps are visible on the reverse side of the grip area, including WaA883 and WaA519. The grip components show age-related handling and storage traces, while presenting an overall coherent condition.
Blade: Single-edged, blued blade with rounded fullers on both sides. The front side bears the stamped number 849. The reverse side is marked with the maker code “42 cof”, where cof stands for Carl Eickhorn Solingen. The blade shows age- and storage-related traces, with parts of the original bluing still preserved. The blade tip is present.
Scabbard: Blued steel scabbard with the same number 849 as found on the blade. This makes it a matching-number set consisting of bayonet and scabbard. The scabbard shows age-related carrying and handling traces, minor surface wear and an age-appropriate finish. The carrying hook is present.
Leather Frog: Leather frog with maker marking C. Riese, Berlin SO 16 and date 1940. The leather shows age-related wear and storage traces, but remains preserved as an accessory for the bayonet. The frog completes the set as a period-style carrying attachment.
Special Features: The combination of matching-number bayonet and scabbard, maker code 42 cof, Waffenamt acceptance stamps and marked leather frog makes this bayonet a clearly attributable example of German 1942 production. The existing markings allow a precise classification by maker, production year and military acceptance stamps.
Historical Background: Bayonet 84/98 III Pattern
The Bayonet 84/98 was one of the standard bayonets used by the German armed forces and was primarily issued for use with the Karabiner 98k. The III pattern is characterized by a simplified, military-practical construction and was produced in large numbers.
During production, maker codes were used to identify manufacturers in an encoded form. The code “cof” stands for Carl Eickhorn Solingen, one of the known Solingen manufacturers of edged weapons, knives and military equipment. The date code 42 indicates production in the year 1942.
Matching-number sets are of particular interest to collectors, as the bayonet and scabbard carry the same number. This indicates that both parts have remained together as a set. Waffenamt markings such as WaA883 and WaA519 document military acceptance or inspection of individual components.
The included leather frog with maker C. Riese, Berlin SO 16 and date 1940 completes the bayonet as a period carrying attachment. Together with the matching-number scabbard, the piece forms a complete-looking set of bayonet, scabbard and leather frog.
