Historical Background: Extra Bayonets (K98) with Etching

Extra bayonets in K98 pattern were frequently worn in Germany as privately purchased dress or walking-out weapons. Unlike strictly regulated service bayonets, these examples were often of higher decorative quality and enhanced with etched blades.

Dedication etchings such as “Zur Erinnerung an meine Dienstzeit” are especially characteristic. They emphasize the role of these bayonets as personal commemorative pieces, acquired at the end of service or to mark significant periods of duty.

The maker Ernst Pack & Söhne (E. P. & S.), Solingen belongs to the well-known Solingen tradition of edged-weapon production. Complete examples with accessories such as portepee and leather frog are particularly sought after today, offering a coherent and highly collectible ensemble.
