SS Dagger [Early Model] by Gottlieb Hammesfahr Solingen

Early SS service dagger from the production period 1933–1935, manufactured by Gottlieb Hammesfahr, Solingen-Foche. This is an early variant with nickel silver crossguards and the Roman numeral “III” stamped on the lower guard, indicating the Reichszeugmeisterei Berlin. Overall length is approximately 37.5 cm.

Grip: Black wooden grip in the classic early form. Fitted with SS runes and the national eagle, both executed in nickel and period-correctly crimped from the inside. The crossguards are made of nickel silver. The lower guard bears the clearly stamped Roman numeral “III” on the reverse.

Blade: Cleaned blade with visible surface. The obverse features the SS motto “Meine Ehre heißt Treue” in a deep and sharply executed style. The reverse is marked “Gottlieb Hammesfahr Solingen-Foche”. The blade shoulders fit precisely and without stress against the lower guard.

Scabbard: Steel scabbard with brown finish, which is atypical for SS daggers. It is assumed that the scabbard originated from an SA dagger and was period-adapted. The scabbard fittings are of nickel silver, each secured by two side screws. The upper fitting retains the suspension ring.

Historical context: Early SS service dagger 1933–1935

The SS service dagger was introduced in 1933 as the sidearm of the Schutzstaffel (SS). Early examples are characterized by high-quality materials such as nickel silver crossguards and finely executed blades.

The Roman numeral “III” on the lower guard indicates inspection by the Reichszeugmeisterei Berlin, a typical feature found on early period daggers.

The maker Gottlieb Hammesfahr, Solingen-Foche is among the established SS dagger manufacturers. Period combinations with non-standard scabbards, such as the brown finished steel scabbard seen here, are documented and reflect early practical usage.
