Kriegsmarine Officer’s Estate Grouping with Eickhorn Officer’s Dagger, Hangers, Portepee, Insignia & Photo Album
Kriegsmarine officer’s estate grouping with Eickhorn Officer’s Dagger Model 1938, two-piece hanger, portepee, various uniform insignia, naval buttons, badges and a photo album. The dagger was manufactured by Carl Eickhorn Solingen. The overall length is approximately 42.0 cm. The grouping is offered as an extensive estate lot consisting of the dagger, wearing accessories and additional Kriegsmarine uniform items.
Dagger: Kriegsmarine Officer’s Dagger Model 1938 with light-colored, ribbed grip, gilded fittings and the so-called lightning scabbard. The grip is fitted with wire wrapping. The pommel is designed as a Kriegsmarine eagle, holding a wreath with swastika in its claws. Crossguard, pommel and scabbard fittings show age-appropriate gilding with patina and traces of use. The release button is present.
Blade: Double-edged, bright blade with etched maritime motifs on both sides, including anchors, scrollwork and trophy decoration. The reverse side bears the maker mark “Original Eickhorn Solingen” with squirrel logo. The blade shows a clean surface with normal age- and storage-related traces. The blade tip is preserved. The leather buffer washer is located between the blade base and the crossguard.
Scabbard: Gilded lightning scabbard with characteristic lightning pattern. The two suspension bands are decorated with oak leaf ornamentation and fitted with closed suspension rings. The throat fitting is secured by side screws. The scabbard shows age-related patina and light signs of use, but appears overall straight and without noticeable dents.
Hanger & Portepee: The dagger comes with a two-piece black hanger with gold-colored fittings, snap hooks and chain section. The hanger parts are backed with black fabric or velvet. The silver-colored portepee is attached to the grip and shows age-related wear and storage traces.
Uniform Insignia & Accessories: The grouping includes various Kriegsmarine uniform insignia, including shoulder boards, collar tabs or cloth insignia, naval buttons with anchor motif, metal badges, cloth badges and further smaller uniform parts. The items show varying states of preservation, with patina, oxidation and age-related wear in places. Also included is a photo album with embossed sailing ship motif; according to the available information, the album is empty.
Historical Background: Kriegsmarine Officer’s Dagger Model 1938
The Kriegsmarine Officer’s Dagger Model 1938 was the typical ceremonial and representative edged weapon worn by officers of the German Kriegsmarine. It was worn with dress and parade uniforms and continued the tradition of earlier German naval daggers. Characteristic features include the light-colored grip, the eagle pommel, maritime blade etching and the gilded scabbard with lightning decoration.
The company Carl Eickhorn Solingen was among the well-known manufacturers of German edged weapons and produced daggers for the Army, Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine. Kriegsmarine officer’s daggers often feature etched blades with anchors, scrollwork and other maritime symbols, emphasizing the representative character of these sidearms.
An estate grouping with dagger, hanger, portepee, uniform insignia, buttons and further accessories documents not only the individual object, but also the historical context of an officer’s equipment. Such groupings are particularly informative when the dagger and additional insignia have remained together.
