Luftwaffe Dagger [M1935] by WKC Solingen
Luftwaffe Dagger Model 1935 (1st Pattern) in early production, manufactured by WKC Solingen. The dagger has an overall length of approximately 48.8 cm and corresponds to the characteristic early configuration with broad blade shoulder base, silver-plated zinc fittings and original leather buffer washer.
Grip: Grip with wooden core, wrapped in blue Moroccan leather (Saffian leather). The triple wire wrapping remains well preserved and undamaged. The pommel displays the characteristic national emblems on both sides and is screwed onto the tang. The grip fittings are made of silver-plated zinc, with the emblems being cast as part of the fittings. The left wing of the crossguard shows visible fractures on both sides and was repaired in the past.
Blade: Double-edged blade without rust or nicks. The blade shoulders fit properly against the crossguard. The reverse side bears the maker mark “WKC Solingen”. The early configuration shows the characteristic broad blade shoulder base typical for early Luftwaffe daggers.
Scabbard: Three-part scabbard without dents or deformation. The scabbard fittings are made of silver-plated steel. The covering of blue Moroccan leather (Saffian leather) corresponds to the characteristic appearance of early Luftwaffe Model 1935 daggers.
Hanger: Original aluminum chain hanger with 6 × 9 chain links. Marked “Ges. Gesch.” and “OLC”. Typical early configuration for Luftwaffe daggers of the Model 1935.
Historical Background: Luftwaffe Dagger Model 1935 (1st Pattern)
The Luftwaffe Dagger Model 1935 was introduced as the first standardized edged weapon of the newly established German Luftwaffe and today ranks among the best-known German organizational daggers. Early examples of the 1st Pattern display characteristic features, including the blue leather grip, chain hanger and distinctive eagle fittings.
Early variants were produced with silver-plated zinc fittings and often feature the characteristic broad blade shoulder base. Makers such as WKC Solingen belong among the known manufacturers of these early Luftwaffe daggers.
The dagger was worn by officers and certain Luftwaffe personnel together with uniform and hanger, serving both ceremonial and service purposes.
