German Army Officer’s Dagger with Hangers by Artur Schüttelhöfer Solingen
Army officer’s dagger according to the Model 1935, manufactured by Artur Schüttelhöfer (ASSO), Solingen. The dagger is offered together with its hanger and portepee. The overall length is approx. 40.2 cm. The blade bears the etched maker’s mark “Artur Schüttelhöfer ASSO Solingen”.
Grip: Round grip with double-twisted, convex fluting. The grip is made of orange Trolon. The conical pommel is screwed onto the tang and decorated with twelve oak leaves. At the lower end of the grip is the characteristic grip ring, ornamented with six oak leaves arranged side by side. The crossguard is designed in the form of a national eagle, facing left, with the wing tips sweeping downward. The eagle holds a wreath with swastika in its talons.
Blade: Double-edged, bright blade in very good condition. The early maker’s mark “Artur Schüttelhöfer ASSO Solingen” is etched on the reverse. The blade tip is fully intact and unshortened. The so-called crossgrain is completely visible. Between the blade shoulders and the lower guard, the original leather blade buffer is present.
Scabbard: Steel scabbard with throat and two oak-leaf decorated scabbard bands, each fitted with loose, fully closed suspension rings. The scabbard is drawn from a single sheet of steel and shows the typical pebbled surface texture on both front and reverse. The tip is rounded and not dented. The throat is separately fitted and secured with two side screws.
Historical context: Army Officer’s Dagger Model 1935
The Army officer’s dagger Model 1935 was introduced as a ceremonial sidearm for officers of the German Army. It was worn primarily for walking-out dress, parades and formal occasions and was not intended as a combat weapon.
Characteristic features include the Trolon grip, the richly designed eagle crossguard and the elaborately finished scabbard with oak-leaf motifs.
The maker Artur Schüttelhöfer (ASSO), Solingen is among the recognized Solingen manufacturers of Army daggers. Examples with fully intact blades, visible crossgrain, original leather buffer and complete hanger and portepee are highly sought after by collectors today.
