German Army Officer’s Dagger [M1935]

Army Officer’s Dagger Model 1935 for officers of the German Army. The dagger has an overall length of approximately 39.8 cm and is preserved as an unmarked version without maker marking on the blade. This piece corresponds to the classic configuration of the Army Officer’s Dagger with yellow Trolon grip, Army eagle crossguard, bright double-edged blade, original leather buffer washer and granulated scabbard.

Grip & Crossguard: Round grip made of yellow Trolon with double-twisted, convex fluting. The fluting curves outward and corresponds to the typical grip design of the Army Officer’s Dagger Model 1935. The conical pommel is firmly screwed onto the tang and decorated with 14 oak leaves. At the lower end of the grip is the grip ring. The crossguard is executed in the form of the Army eagle, facing left, with downward swept wing tips. In the center, the eagle holds a wreath with swastika in its claws.

Blade: Double-edged, bright blade without maker marking. Between the blade shoulders and the lower crossguard is the original leather buffer washer. Unmarked blades are known within this dagger model and are identified through construction, grip execution, fittings, scabbard and other detail features.

Scabbard: The scabbard is made from drawn sheet steel and displays the typical granulated surface texture on both front and reverse. Fitted with a separately inserted throat piece, secured by one screw. The scabbard has two oak leaf decorated suspension bands with loose, fully closed suspension rings. The tip of the scabbard is rounded and not dented. The scabbard corresponds to the classic scabbard form of the Army Officer’s Dagger Model 1935.

Special Features: Especially noteworthy is the combination of yellow Trolon grip, unmarked bright blade, original leather buffer washer, Army eagle crossguard and granulated scabbard with oak leaf decorated suspension bands. This dagger represents a classic, maker-unmarked version of the Army Officer’s Dagger Model 1935 in coherent condition.

Historical Background: Army Officer’s Dagger Model 1935

The Army Officer’s Dagger Model 1935 was introduced as a representative edged weapon for officers of the German Army. It formed part of the dress and parade uniform and was not intended as a combat knife, but as a rank and representation item within the officer’s equipment.

Typical features of this dagger model include the fluted grip, the conical pommel with oak leaf decoration, the crossguard with Army eagle and the granulated scabbard with two oak leaf decorated suspension bands. Depending on maker, production period and material execution, numerous variations exist in grip material, grip color, fittings, blade markings and scabbard surfaces.

Not all Army Officer’s Daggers carry a maker marking on the blade. Unmarked blades are known within this dagger model and are identified by construction, grip, fittings, scabbard and general manufacturing features.

The present dagger shows the classic design of the Army Officer’s Dagger Model 1935 with yellow Trolon grip, Army eagle crossguard, original leather buffer washer, bright unmarked blade and granulated scabbard. It is therefore a typical example of this well-known officer dagger model.
