Army Officer’s Dagger [M1935] with Hanger and Portepee by Robert Klaas Solingen
Army Officer’s Dagger Model 1935 with hanger and portepee, manufactured by Robert Klaas Solingen. The dagger has an overall length of approximately 40.3 cm and corresponds to the classic configuration of the Army Officer’s Dagger with orange-colored Trolon grip, oak leaf decorated fittings, granulated scabbard and complete wearing accessories. The reverse side of the blade bears the early maker logo “Robert Klaas Solingen”.
Grip & Crossguard: Round Trolon grip in orange coloration with double-twisted, convex fluting. The conical pommel is firmly screwed onto the tang and decorated with surrounding oak leaf ornamentation. At the lower end of the grip is the typical decorative grip ring with oak leaves arranged side by side. The crossguard is executed in the form of the Army eagle, facing left, with downward swept wing tips. In its claws, the eagle holds a wreath with swastika.
Blade: Double-edged, bright blade in very good condition with fully preserved, uncut tip. The reverse side bears the early maker logo “Robert Klaas Solingen”. The so-called crossgrain is fully present. Between the blade shoulders and lower crossguard is the original leather buffer washer. The blade shoulders fit cleanly against the crossguard.
Scabbard: Steel scabbard made from drawn sheet steel with the typical granulated surface texture on both front and reverse. Fitted with a separately inserted throat fitting, secured on the reverse with a screw, and two oak leaf decorated suspension bands. Each suspension band has a loose, fully closed suspension ring. The tip of the scabbard is rounded and not dented.
Hanger & Portepee: The dagger comes with a matching two-piece hanger with carrying straps, metal fittings, slides, buckles and snap hooks. The portepee is attached to the dagger and completes the full wearing set. Together with scabbard, hanger and portepee, the piece forms a complete ensemble of the Army Officer’s Dagger Model 1935.
Special Features: The combination of Robert Klaas Solingen, early maker logo, very well preserved blade with fully present crossgrain, orange-colored Trolon grip, complete scabbard, hanger and portepee makes this Army Officer’s Dagger a particularly coherent collector’s piece within German Army edged weapons.
Historical Background: Army Officer’s Dagger Model 1935
The Army Officer’s Dagger Model 1935 was introduced as a representative edged weapon for officers of the German Army. It was part of the dress and parade uniform and was not intended as a combat knife, but as a visible rank and representation item within the officer’s equipment.
Typical features of this dagger model include the fluted grip, the conical pommel with oak leaf decoration, the crossguard with Army eagle and the granulated scabbard with two oak leaf decorated suspension bands. Depending on maker, production period and material execution, numerous variations exist in grip material, color tone, fittings, blade markings and hangers.
Robert Klaas Solingen was one of the well-known Solingen manufacturers of edged weapons, daggers and knives. The maker logo on the blade allows a clear attribution and is an important feature for collectors when identifying Army Officer’s Daggers.
The matching hanger and the portepee formed part of the complete wearing equipment of an Army Officer’s Dagger. They completed the dagger on the uniform and document the original equipment context of this representative edged weapon.
