NSFK Glider Pilot Knife [M1937] with Hanger - Stöcker & Co. Solingen

NSFK Flying Knife Model 1937 (1st Variant) in early nickel-mounted construction with original leather hanger, manufactured by SMF Solingen (Solinger Metallwaffenfabrik / Stöcker & Co.). The knife represents the early 1st variant of the NSFK flying knife and has an overall length of approximately 33.8 cm. Early examples of this configuration remain closely related in construction to the previously issued DLV flying knives.

Grip: Wooden grip covered with original dark blue leather. The pommel and the stylized wing-shaped crossguard are made of nickel alloy. Centrally inserted is the enameled swastika medallion. The crossguard is slightly bent downward and marked on the side with “K”, the abbreviation of the casting manufacturer. The underside of the crossguard additionally bears the markings “Schl” and “676”. The knife is held together by the screwed pommel. The originally present blue leather buffer washer is missing.

Blade: Double-edged blade in well-preserved condition. Blade length approximately 175 mm, width at the widest point approximately 26 mm. The tip remains fully intact. The reverse side bears the maker mark of SMF Solingen (seated king above initials with crown and sword). Light spotting is present on both sides of the blade.

Scabbard: Iron scabbard covered with original dark blue leather. The fittings are made of nickel alloy and display the characteristic decorative circumferential grooves. The two-piece throat fitting is secured by flat-head screws. The throat bears the NSFK acceptance marking together with the markings “KI.” and “252”. The original leather hanger is attached to the suspension ring.

Hanger: Early leather hanger in the characteristic configuration used for DLV and NSFK flying knives. The leather sections are connected by riveted oval connecting plates. The nickel snap hook shows age-related patina and is without maker markings.

Historical Background: NSFK Flying Knife Model 1937 (1st Variant)

Following the establishment of the National Socialist Flyers Corps (NSFK) in 1937, previously issued DLV flying knives were partially retained and incorporated into the new organization. Early NSFK knives often differ from earlier DLV examples mainly by the presence of the NSFK Icarus acceptance stamp.

The 1st variant of the NSFK flying knife closely corresponds in material and construction to the early nickel-mounted DLV version. Characteristic features include nickel fittings, the dark blue leather covering on grip and scabbard, and the stylized wing-shaped crossguard.

Makers such as SMF Solingen belong to the recognized manufacturers of these knives, which today form a distinct collecting field within German organizational edged weapons.
