Honor Hunting Cutlass with Dedication to a Court Marshal for a 50th Jubilee – E. & F. Hörster Solingen

Honor Hunting Cutlass with dedication to a Court Marshal for a 50th jubilee, manufactured by E. & F. Hörster Solingen. The hunting cutlass has a stag horn grip, richly decorated fittings and an elaborately etched, single-edged blade. The blade bears the dedication “Ihrem Hofmarschall – 50 – Hubert I. – Christel I.”. The overall length is approximately 375 mm, with a weight of approximately 516 g.

Grip & Hilt: The grip is made of stag horn with clearly visible natural texture. Two applied hunting-themed decorative elements are fitted to the front of the grip. The hilt has a yellow-metal-colored finish and features a curved crossguard with leaf-shaped ends. Below the crossguard is a shell-shaped guard plate.

Blade: Single-edged, bright blade with extensive ornamental and hunting-themed etching. The decoration includes floral ornaments and hunting motifs. Integrated into the etching is the dedication “Ihrem Hofmarschall – 50 – Hubert I. – Christel I.”. The ricasso area bears the maker marking of E. & F. Hörster Solingen.

Dedication: The inscription on the blade is explicitly addressed to a Court Marshal. The number 50 is prominently incorporated into the dedication and apparently refers to a personal jubilee or a corresponding occasion. An exact date cannot be determined from this number alone.

Scabbard: The scabbard has a black textured covering with yellow-metal-colored fittings at the upper and lower ends. The upper fitting features an oval, applied decorative element. The scabbard is complete and shows age-related traces.

Condition: The hunting cutlass is in overall condition 1-. Grip, hilt, blade and scabbard are preserved. The blade etching and dedication inscription remain clearly visible. The grip, fittings and scabbard show age- and use-related traces.

Historical Background: Honor Hunting Cutlass with Court Marshal Dedication

Hunting cutlasses and Hirschfängers were worn as hunting sidearms and representative pieces of equipment. In addition to standard versions, more elaborately decorated examples existed with personal dedications, presented for jubilees or other special occasions.

On this example, the dedication “Ihrem Hofmarschall – 50 – Hubert I. – Christel I.” is integrated directly into the blade etching. The title Court Marshal refers to a historical court office whose responsibilities, depending on the individual court, could include the organization and administration of the court household and ceremonial functions.

E. & F. Hörster Solingen was a Solingen manufacturer of edged weapons. The maker marking at the ricasso allows the piece to be attributed to this manufacturer. An exact date or a definite identification of the persons named in the dedication cannot be established from the number 50 and the inscription alone.

The hunting cutlass is described as a historical collector’s object and period edged weapon. The description is limited to construction, maker, dedication, blade decoration and condition.
