DJV Deluxe Hunting Cutlass

Deutscher Jägerverband (DJV) hunting hanger in luxury finish with an elaborately triple-etched blade. The scabbard bears the engraving “1960-75” and “Alle Wege gut Waidwerk”. The overall length is approx. 45.0 cm.

Blade: Strong, single-edged wedge-shaped blade with hunting-themed decorative etching on both sides, featuring leaf and animal motifs. The spine side is also etched, resulting in an overall three-sided decoration. There is no maker’s mark on the blade.

Grip: Stag horn grip with inset DJV emblem of the Deutscher Jägerverband. The pommel cap and crossguard are finely worked in raised relief. The clam shell guard shows a detailed relief depiction of a capercaillie. The blade tang is securely screwed into the grip.

Scabbard: Green-painted scabbard covered in leather, executed in an attractive style. The fittings are silvered; the throat and tip appear finely worked. The scabbard is preserved in very nice condition, without dents or chips.

Historical Context: hunting hanger of the Deutscher Jägerverband

The hunting hanger is one of the most traditional edged weapons of the hunting world in the German-speaking region. Beyond its original role as a hunting sidearm, it increasingly developed during the 19th and 20th centuries into a representational and status-related piece, worn at hunting occasions, association events, and ceremonial gatherings.

Examples of the Deutscher Jägerverband (DJV) continue this tradition in a more modern form. Typical features include hunting motifs, stag horn grips, decorative fittings, and elaborately etched blades. Such pieces stand less for military use and more for hunting tradition, representation, and association culture.

Particularly appealing in this example is the combination of a triple-etched blade, the inset DJV emblem, the relief capercaillie on the clam shell guard, and the engraved scabbard. In this high-grade luxury finish, the piece has a distinctly decorative and collector-interesting character.
