Nazi propaganda leaflet “Dein Bekenntnis: Adolf Hitler!” for the plebiscite of 10 April 1938. The small-format printed leaflet was distributed as part of the National Socialist propaganda campaign surrounding the vote on the already completed “Anschluss” of Austria to the German Reich. The dimensions are approximately 15.6 × 21.0 cm.
Design: Printed leaflet on reddish-orange paper. The front contains several propaganda texts printed in Fraktur type and directly refers to the voting day of 10 April 1938. One of the central slogans reads “Dein Bekenntnis: Adolf Hitler!”.
Dimensions: Approx. 15.6 × 21.0 cm. The leaflet belongs to the contemporary political printed material and propaganda publications connected with the April 1938 plebiscite.
Condition: Historical paper document with clear age- and use-related traces. There are several losses, tears and smaller damaged areas along the edges. The paper shows folds and creases. The printed text remains visible.
Historical Background: Propaganda for the Plebiscite of 10 April 1938
On 12 March 1938, German troops entered Austria. The formal “Anschluss” of Austria to the German Reich was carried out on 13 March 1938. The plebiscite of 10 April 1938 therefore took place only after Austria had already been incorporated.
The plebiscite was accompanied by an extensive National Socialist propaganda campaign. In addition to large posters, leaflets, handbills, postcards and other small-format printed materials were used to promote the approval sought by the regime.
The plebiscite was not conducted under the conditions of a free democratic election. Between 300,000 and 400,000 Austrian citizens were excluded from voting, including Jews, Roma and political opponents of the Nazi regime.
